Matthew "Matt" Wilding is a fictional character in the BBC television drama series Waterloo Road. He is portrayed by Chris Geere.
Series 3
Matt made his first appearance in 3x01, taking over the teaching of Drama after the murder of previous teacher Izzie Redpath (who had been stabbed at the end of series 2). He arrived very late into the school day (and the episode) due to delays at the airport, but Jack Rimmer scheduled a meeting the following day at 8 am.
Steph Haydock initially appeared to take a shine to Matt, but in an episode aired on 1 November 2007, Matt revealed to her that he was homosexual; his "housemate" Colin is actually his boyfriend of several years. His homosexuality soon became known to the pupils (due to the text that came from Maxine Barlow), and he once came across the word "bender" painted on the door of the male staff toilets by Paul Langley, who blamed it on his friend. The group of boys responsible were just walking from the scene, and Matt apprehended them and became convinced of their guilt when he came across a can of spray-paint in one boy's bag.
Matt's production of the school musical was criticised by fellow new teacher Jasmine Koreshi, who suggested that she could have been done a better production than he had.
He has since proposed to his partner Colin, after informing his mother of his homosexuality.
However, it was revealed in Series 4 that Matt and Colin had broken up.
Series 4
Matt's life gets even more complicated following the aftermath of the Kelly kids being taken into care when he becomes Sambuca Kelly's foster carer. It gets worse when Sam's dad turns up and starts laying down the law to him. After Reynold Kelly steals Sam to her real home Reynold steals Matt's television in a strop. Matt saves Sambuca from her Dad at the end of the episode with something he'd seen on the television.
Matt left Waterloo Road at the end of Series 4 to a post at a new private school.
Series 7
On 30 May 2011, Chris Geere announced he would be returning to Waterloo Road during the second half of the seventh series.[1]
He appeared in episode 11, having been headhunted by new headmaster Micahel Byrne. His return is to get music and drama going again.
