West End

is a wholly unincorporated area in suburban Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It is the collection of communities within and adjacent to County Commission District 11. At the time of the 2010 census, there were 213,839 residents. The Hammocks, Country Walk, Kendall West, Kendale Lakes, Three Lakes, The Crossings and Tamiami are all Census Designated Areas within West End.

Geography

West End’s boundaries are the Florida Turnpike to the east, Southwest 152nd Street to the south, Krome Avenue to the west and Tamiami Trail (Southwest 8th Street) to the north.

Demographics

West End residents account for 8.6% of Miami-Dade County’s population. It is the second most populous district behind Commission District 9. The West End had a 20.4% growth from 2000 to 2010. It has an annual growth rate of .9%. Since 2011, there has been an increase in new residents who have immigrated to West End from abroad. West End is extremely culturally diverse with highly educated residents and an above average income. The area has the lowest overall poverty rate of all districts in Miami-Dade County. Only 7.7% of the West End population lives below poverty level. This number has been decreasing since 2000. West End also enjoys a low crime rate.

  1. Florida International University is a state university located at the northern edge of the West End. It is currently the 4th largest public university in the nation.
  2. The West Kendall Baptist Hospital is part of the Baptist Health South Florida network- a national not-for-profit system of hospitals. The Hospital is a major regional employer.

  • b. Route 40 runs from 152nd Street to the Douglas Road Metrorail Station and also to the University Lakes Trailer Park on SW 131st Avenue.
  • c. 51 Flagler MAX has weekday service only and runs from SW 137th Avenue and SW 8th Street to the Government Center Metrorail Station.
  • d. Route 56 has weekday service only and runs from Ferguson High School on SW 162nd Avenue to Miami Children’s Hospital on SW 62nd Avenue.
  • e. Route 72 runs from the West Kendall Transit Terminal/Park & Ride lot on 167th Avenue to the South Miami Metrorail Station on US 1.
  • f. Route 88 runs from the West Kendall Transit Terminal/Park & Ride lot to the Dadeland North Metrorail Station.
  • g. Route 104 runs from the West Kendall Transit Terminal/Park & Ride lot to the Dadeland North Metrorail Station.
  • h. Route 136 has weekday rush-hour service only and runs from the Immigration & Naturalization Office on SW 147th Avenue and SW 112th Street to the Douglas Road Metrorail Station and the Dadeland South Metrorail Station.
  • i. Route 137 West Dade Connection runs from Dolphin Mall to the South Dade Government Center on 211th Street.
  • j. Route 204 Killian KAT has weekday rush-hour service only and runs from the West Kendall Transit Terminal/Park & Ride Lot to the Dadeland North Metrorail Station.
  • k. Route 252 Coral Reef Max runs from Country Walk to the Dadeland South Metrorail Station.
  • l. Route 272 Sunset KAT has weekday rush-hour service only and runs from the West Kendall Transit Terminal/Park & Ride lot to the Dadeland North Metrorail Station.

  1. Miami Executive Airport is a public airport in the southwest of West End. It is operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and serves mostly single engine light aircraft.

Innovation District

The Innovation District is an area within West End focused around the Miami Executive Airport. The area is projected to become mixed-use with a focus on innovation and technology. Because West End has the highest concentration of the professional workforce in Miami-Dade County, the plan will attract more professional jobs to the area and provide a stable workforce of professionals who will live and work in West End.

Annual Events

  2. The West End Art Fair is a free event that features live entertainment, food trucks an activities for children. The main feature is the exhibition of artwork by local artists. Student artwork from local schools is also showcased.
