Assouline Publishing is a book publisher founded in 1994 by Prosper and Martine Assouline. It has published about 1,500 titles on subjects including architecture, art, design, fashion, gastronomy, lifestyle, photography and travel.

History

In 1994, Prosper and Martine Assouline published their first book, La Colombe d’Or, on the history of their favorite hotel in the South of France, with photographs by Prosper and text by Martine.[1] The publishing house began in the basement of the couple’s apartment in Paris[2] and one year later, the firm opened its first office on rue Danielle Casanova in the center of Paris.[3] The company later opened more offices, first in New York,[4] and then in Venice, Geneva, Istanbul, and London.[5] Soon after launching the company started the Memoire collection of books focusing on noteworthy names in fashion, jewelry, design, and art.[6] Initial publications included books about Azzedine Alaïa, Chanel, Vionnet, and Dior.[4] As of 1997, about half a million editions from the Memoire collection had been sold,[7] with 27 titles on Paris in addition to others.[4]

Assouline has partnered with fashion companies, including: Poirier, Chanel, Pucci, Dior, Doucet, Vionnet, Goyard, Coach, Andrée Putman, and Valentino to create special editions and trunks.[8][9] Assouline titles have been published in multiple different languages.[10] In 2001, Assouline published Lee Radziwill’s memoir, Happy Times, which would become the template for the company’s Lifetime collection, focusing on international destinations and style. Assouline also produces the "Impossible Collection" of books[11][12] and the “Ultimate Collection”.[13] In 2002 they published the book Bright Young Things by Brooke de Ocampo.[14] Then in 2007, the company owners relocated to New York City, and that same year they began to partner with the Council of Fashion Designers of America.[15]

In 2008, The "Impossible Collection", a limited-edition hand-bound luxury volume featuring hand-tipped-on images of twentieth-century fine art pieces.

In 2010, Assouline introduced the "Ultimate Collection" of hand-made books, based on the "Impossible Collection" oversize format, on cars, fashion, jewelry, and watches.

In 2012, Assouline produced a luxury waterproof book with South Pole.
