Diane Farrell (born August 10, 1955, New Rochelle, New York) is the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in the 2006 congressional election in Connecticut's 4th District. She is running against Chris Shays, a Republican.
Farrell has just finished her second term as the first selectwoman of the town of Westport, Connecticut. She was elected in 1997 by 59% of the vote and by 71% in 2001. Farrell was elected to office on both occasions with the support not only of her fellow Democrats, but also a signifigant group of independents and Republicans.[1]
Farrell had previously run for Congress in Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District in 2004. She began her campaign in the spring of that year, raised over $1.5 million and received 48% of the vote (51% in Westport). Although she was defeated by incumbent Chris Shays on Election Day, she was the first Democrat in years to actually present a challenge to the incumbent.
Her endorsers include the Connecticut AFL-CIO, several other labor unions, the pro-choice group EMILY's List, and the National Organization for Women.
In the campaign finance reporting period ending June 30, 2006, Farrell had $1,376,139 cash on hand to Shays' $1,507,565, according to PoliticalMoneyLine [2]. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report [3] ranks this race as a "Toss Up."
Farrell is a former elementary school teacher who later worked in the advertising industry who first became engaged in school politics when her children entered the Westport public schools.
