Sir William was married to Helen Erskine, a daughter of Colonel John Erskine. They had nine children, of whom their eldest son, Sir John Douglas, 3rd Bt. of Kelhead (b.b. 1733- 13 Nov. 1778) suceeded to the title upon his fathers death.
Sir William was unmarried, and upon his death, the baronetcy passed to his younger brother, Major-General Sir [[Howard Douglas]].

Sir William Douglas, 2nd Baronet of Kelhead, (b. before 1690, d. 10 Oct., 1733) was the son of Sir James Douglas 1st Bt. of Kelhead, and Catherine Douglas (a daughter of the 2nd Earl of Queensbury, which made her a cousin)
