Koh Lipe is a tiny island in the Andaman Sea located 70 km off the southwest coast of Thailand near the Malaysian border. There are three nearby islands surrounding Ko Lipe: Ko Adang, Ko Kra and Ko Hai. Ko Lipe is 2 km south of the larger island Ko Adang. It lies just outside the protection of the Tarutao Marine National Park. It was settled by a band of sea gipsies originally from Malaysia, known as the 'Chao Lei' people or also known as [[Urak Lawoi]]. This island has three main beaches: Sunset beach, Sunrise beach and Pattaya beach. Accommodation from grass huts to air-conditioned bungalows can be found on these beaches. There is just one road on the island which connects Sunrise beach to Pattaya beach so travellers must walk around the rest of the island using well-worn tracks, although it is possible to walk around the entire island in little over an hour.

The island can be reached all year around. The high season is from November to May with daily ferries all up and down the coast. During low season the daily boats only operate between Ko Lipe and Pak Bara. Since 2008 there have been some concrete roads built and the Satun government has been tidying up the island. The medical clinic by the new school has been expanded but still lacks a full time doctor. Most resorts have 24 hour electricity either produced by their own generators, or bought from other suppliers on the island. The Thai name is transliterated many different ways into English. The most common names in English are Koh Lipe, Koh Lipeh, Ko Lipey and Ko Lipe.

As a result of the island being outside of the protection limits, less rules are imposed on tourists. The recent increase in tourism has created more garbage. The garbage is burned on the island, thus creating air pollution. With more tourists going to Ko Lipe, there are more [[longtail boat]]s being operated around the island. Longtail boats are very noisy and leak gas into the water. In turn this disrupts the delicate marine ecosystem surrounding the island.
