The DEMOLITION DERBY LEAGUE OF NORTH AMERICA (DDL) is a member-based organization that serves as the international, sanctioning body for combative, motorized sports. The membership is composed of drivers, car builders, team owners, crew members, event promoters, track owners, sponsors, media interests, fans and enthusiasts. Through its demolition derbies, interactive online member portal, live monthly broadcasts, and other hard-hitting features, the League provides opportunities for participants of all interest levels to engage in the world of aggressive driving.

About Demolition Derbies

History

The first derbies were organized by independent promoters at various fairs and race tracks. Common lore pinpoints demolition derbies as originating in the 1950's, however derby historian Bill Lowenburg notes the following entry in the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition, published in 1953:

Demolition derby: n. (ca. 1953): a contest in which skilled drivers ram old cars into one another until only one car remains running.

Lowenburg believes the phrase and sport must have existed for several years prior in order for it to have merited an entry in Webster's by 1953.^[1] One of the earliest documented derby-type events was a 1946 "full-contact" four driver race, hosted by West Coast racing promoter Don Basile in Gardena, California. ^[2]

Today, demolition derbies and related events are very popular in North America with over 2,000 events held annually and over 5 million people in attendance. The DDL partners with these events and helps organizers, participants and attendees enjoy an exceptional experience.

Types of Events

Traditional demolition derbies involve drivers deliberately and repeatedly crashing motorized vehicles into each other, on a racetrack or in an enclosed area, with the winner being the last vehicle still moving after all others have been disabled. Oftentimes, these events are held at county fairs and festivals. Rollovers, enduro, figure 8, banger, Siamese, train, "Football" games, tractor pulls, and other racing styles also comprise the sport. In Enduro events, or banger races as they are known in Europe, derby cars race around an oval track for a designated number of laps (usually 100). As they race, drivers attempt to run opponents off the track or disable cars by crashing into them. Disabled cars remain on the rack as obstacles for the remaining racers to navigate.

The DEMOLITION DERBY LEAGUE

The DEMOLITION DERBY LEAGUE was founded in 2007 by League Commissioner Dudley Disastro. It is currently governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, many of whom belong to the Disastro family.

The goals of the DDL are to:

    - Provide informational resources for members and guests about the world of combative motorsports
    - Introduce new and prospective enthusiasts to the organization and encourage their participation in events
    - Foster interaction among members
    - Promote activities which further the goals of the organization, including online services, live events and televised productions.
    - Facilitate main-stream media access to member activities and partner events

Ambassador Program

In 2010, the DDL rolled out their Ambassador Program, through which selected League members will serve as official representatives and will work hand in hand with promoters, sponsors, media interests and other members to promote the sport of demolition derby.
