The Bellin Run

History

The Bellin Run is a 10k or 6.2 mile race run on the east side of Green Bay Wisconsin right outside of Bellin Hospital. The first Bellin 10K was held on June 12, 1977 and was known as the Bellin Heartwarming Run to promote cardiovascular fitness and wellness. It was intended to be a one-time event to help celebrate the dedication of the Van Buren Street addition to Bellin Hospital. The Run drew 881 participants.

That next January, Bellin started receiving calls about when the next Bellin Run would be scheduled. So Bellin officials decided to hold a second run, titled the Bellin 10K Run, to see if it would be as successful as the first. More than 1100 runners turned out and the tradition was born.

Over the years the event has continued to grow in both stature and the number of participants. In 2010, a record 18,398 people registered for the event, the largest field ever.[2] It was among the top 10 largest timed 10K races in the nation. The course is United States Track and Field certified and the run is sanctioned by the Athletics Congress. Many features have been added over the years such as computerized chip timing, preferred starting positions for faster runners, Internet streamlined video of the finish, post race refreshments, entertainment along the course, an All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner, and Health Expo the night before the run, and wave starts.[3]

Course

The Bellin Run is a 10k or 6.2 mile road race that weaves through beautiful downtown Green Bay. The race starts out in front of Bellin Hospital on Webster Avenue under the skywalk in front hundreds of spectators. The race brings participants South on Webster Avenue, and continue through the scenic streets of downtown Green Bay and Allouez finishing back on Webster and under the skywalk for the finish. The course boasts tree-lined roads, the East River off to the right for most of mile three, and beautiful residential areas. The course is relatively flat, with the exception of an extended downhill stretch on Greene Ave. The roads are closed for that morning to ensure safety, and a collaboration of safety departments from surrounding towns help to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. Times are given at each mile point and water stations are located at 1.8, 3.4, 4.7 and 5.7 mile distances. Medical personnel are available on the course for any person in need of assistance.

Back to the Road Crew

This is a group of people who suffered serious injuries or illnesses, but through the efforts of them and Bellin Health, were able to recuperate. This group of people participates in a 1 mile shortened version of the Bellin Run, but the completion of this is a monumental step in their road to recovery.

Course Entertainment

Friday Night Festivities

A Children's Run

Children’s Run & Fun Event

In 1991, a noncompetitive children’s run was added. In 1995 that run was dedicated to the memory of Dick Lytie, an avid runner and Bellin supporter who died in the summer of 1994. Due to it’s popularity and size, the run now takes place on the Friday evening before the Bellin run. It features a ¼ mile course for kids 6 and under, and a ½ mile course for kids aged 7-10. In 2010 registration for the children’s run was just under 3000 making it a huge part of the Bellin Run experience. Schneider National Trucking company is the major sponsor responsible for making the Children’s run happen every year.

Friday Health Expo

On the same Friday night before the big race Astor Park plays host to a health expo coordinated by Bellin, and sponsored by several very fine sponsors. At the expo there is an all-you-can eat spaghetti dinner, booths filled with many different health themed vendors, and a ton of activities for the kids to participate in. These activities include a large playground, inflatable toys, entertainers, and of course a meet and greet autograph session with the elite athletes.

Free Training Program

Bellin Health provides free training sessions in a 12 week program to help “Run a Better Bellin”. This program gives runners and walkers a community setting to train for the 10K race. Proper training is essential for running a better Bellin Run. Bellin Health is dedicated to helping promote health and wellness in the community. That dedication is not solely reserved for the day of the Bellin Run. Bellin tries to promote health and wellness all year long, because it is in changing the attitude towards exercise that makes the difference. It is open to walkers and runners of any experience level.

Race Registration Information

Registration for the Bellin Run is available online and via mail-in or drop-off brochures. The price of registration is dependent on when the runner registers, with incentives to register early and online. Registration is around $20. A few years ago Bellin instituted online registration. It wasn't as quick to take the first year, but after that, most of the registrations occur online, and the preferred way to register is now online.

Recent Changes

Wave Starts

Wave starts were implemented a few years ago to accommodate the increasing number of runners. This format allows the faster runners to race with a clear field so that each group of participants gets a fair shot to complete their race. Along with the wave starts, each participant has a computerized timing chip to ensure accuracy with such a start.

Astor Park

Astor Park has been home to the pre-race and post-race activities since 2009. It is a larger location than the previously used Baird Park, this move helped to accommodate the growing number of registrants and spectators.

Timing Chips

T-Shirts

A new T-shirt design is used every year, and T-shirts can be purchased , but all volunteers and registrants receive a T-shirt to commemorate their involvement in that years Bellin Run.

Charity

Nursing Scholrship

Since 1991 Bellin has contributed the proceeds of the Bellin Run to the Bellin College of Nursing scholarship program. This affords many future nurses the opportunity to receive a quality education. In 2010 over $150,000 were raised for the nursing scholarship program.

Communitty Contributions

The Bellin Run is a community-building event that sees thousands of participants and spectators annually. Live entertainment along with pre and post race activities make the Bellin Run a fun event for the community.

Corporate Challenge

Every Year different corporations from around the area compete in a corporate challenge in the Bellin Run.
