The University of the Nations - Kona Campus (UofN-Kona) is located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (USA). Under the umbrella organization of the Youth With A Mission (YWAM), the UofN-Kona campus is part of the University of the Nations, a global Christian university with branch campuses in 600 locations in 142 countries, providing coursework in over 100 languages around the world. As it's initial and still one of the larger branches, the Kona campus has 2,000 students enrolled per year and approximately 500 full-time staff and faculty.[2]

History

Founded in 1978 by Loren Cunningham, the founder of Youth with a Mission and Howard Malmstadt, a master educator and pioneer in the field of spectroscopy[3], it was initially called Pacific & Asia Christian University (PACU), however after branches spread beyond the Pacific basin into Europe and Africa, it was renamed the University of the Nations in 1989.

Education

The U of N offers Associate's degrees, Bachelor's degrees, Graduate Diplomas and Master's degrees from its seven colleges. These colleges are the College of the Arts and Sports, College of Christian Ministries, College of Communication, College of Counseling and Health Care, College of Education, College of Humanities and International Studies, and the College of Science and Technology. There are also five interdisciplinary centers: the Community Development Center; the Center for Discipleship Training Schools; the Family Resource Center; the Student Mobilization Center; and the GENESIS Center.

Accreditation

As a part of an global network of peer campuses in 142 nations, the UofN-Kona Campus is not accredited by any United States accrediting agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education, however the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs recognizes the UofN-Kona campus as an unaccredited degree-granting institution allowing the U.S. INS to issue F-1 visas to degree seeking international students.[11]

Without recognition from an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education, degrees and credit from the UofN-Kona campus and other campuses within the UofN International network, face the limitations of many international degrees. They might not be acceptable to employers or other institutions, and use of degree titles may be restricted in some U.S. states.[12]

The University of the Nations maintains that many U.S. academic institutions have accepted and continue to accept transfer credits. They elaborate that with the UofN Int'l. requirement that Bachelor degree-seeking students take substantial coursework not just in another nation, but in a substantially different culture in order to graduate. When UofN students regularly have taken UofN courses at branch locations in 30 or more nations by the time they graduate, this is almost always beyond the scope of any accrediting body based in just one nation.[13]
