Kwela Tebza is a South African Kwela trio that consists of three brothers, Mpho, Tebogo, and Tshepo Lerole.[1]They play pennywhistles. [2]

History

1996

The trio has been performing since 1996 and has 4 successful albums to its name. The three Soweto-born brothers who make up the popular group - Tebogo, Tshepo and Mpho - have created an act that is unique and contemporary, but undeniably South African[3], a feat not dissimilar to that of their father Elias “Shamba” Lerole, and relative Big Jack Lerole, during the 1950's. They continue drawing inspiration from this colourful and musically productive era, fusing elements from Sophiatown and South African Jazz with contemporary beats and modern production techniques, to create their characteristic brand of "Kwela Tebza Kwaito". Couple this distinct sound with the Lerole brothers' electrifying stage presence, and it is no surprise that the act has taken off across South Africa and beyond, and that their list of loyal fans include top names like Danny Glover![4]

2014/15: New Music

After taking time out from the music they are ready to come back into the music scene with a new album. The album, aptly labelled "Made In Africa" is set for release in 2014/5 and would feature a number of world-class African and International musicians the likes of Femi Kuti, Salif Keita, Youssour 'N Dour, Coldplay and Rihanna.[5]

Artistry

This dainty instrument along with their musical talent has launched them to a spectacular platform that has taken them from one prestigious stage to another, such as the South African Music Awards, The Academy Awards, FIFA World Cup. They have collaborated with many esteemed South African artists like The Parlotones, Mahotela Queens, Zolani of Freshly Ground, Sliqour, Mxo, Tuks, Mzekezeke, Khanyi Mbau[6], Thembi Seete, Pro kid, Spikiri, Oskido and Winnie Khumalo just to name a few.

The Leroles are heirs and now carriers of the distinctive Kwela genre with a very patriotic and proud mannerism on their craft, music and country; they hoist their flag up high to the world hence their first album - from a trilogy series titled "Made in South Africa"

Other Ventures

Apart from being musicians in such a unique and niche Market; as philanthropist, Green Ambassadors, Kwela Tebza is worked on a reality television series ”Dream Builders” to build previously disadvantaged families and communities homes, uplifting and empowering the needy on the importance of greening our communities, building better living conditions of South African people and the innovative trio have also taken steps in the movement of teaching the youth about their heritage, culture, music literature and the Penny whistle. They teach children as young as 9 years to 16 year olds to play the instrument.
