Libby Birch (born 3 December 1997).[1] is an Australian rules footballer (Afl womens) and has represented Victoria as a Netball player at National Netball Championships. [2].She is a dual sport athlete who has also previously played State League Hockey. In 2016 Birch switched over to Australian Rules womens football and was drafted as a Rookie for the Western Bulldogs after having only played football for three months, for Grandfinal winners Darebin Falcons,in the Victorian Women's Football League (Vflwomens)[3]

Sporting background

Birch went to School at Maribyrnong Sports Academy where she was College Captain, She became the Academy’s first elite professional female Australian Rules Womens football player.She played various sports including tennis, hockey and netball at the academy. Birch captained the Victorian State Netball Under 15 ,17, 19 sides winning numerous gold medals as a midcourter at National Netball Championships all over Australia.[4] Birch also represented Australian teams and squads several times and captained Australia in the 2013 Trans Tasman International Challenge in New Zealand.[5]

Making the code switch

In April 2016 Birch won a silver medal as Victoria finished runners up at the Under 21 National Championships. After that tournament she was overlooked for the Australian Netball Team selection .She then took up an offer from Daisy Pearce to try out Australian rules football . Before 18th June, 2016 she had never kicked a football and some 10 weeks later played and won a VFL Premiership cup with her team ,Darebin,[6] to go alongside her Victorian State Netball league premiership (won with VNL championship team Boroondara ).[7]

Western Bulldogs Aflw player

In 2017 Birch played all seven games for the Western Bulldogs as a 19 year old rookie . She made her AFLW debut in the opening round against Fremantle and played off half back and the wing . She also played as a lock down player in some of the seven Aflw games . Birch continues to play for Darebin in the VWFL [8] and has been redrafted on to the Senior List of the Western Bulldogs for the 2018 AFLW Season [9]. She plays in the back line currently and is developing from Netballer to Footballer in other on field positions . [10]

Statistics 2017 Aflw season

Birch wears number 8 in the vfl and 18 in the Aflw . She averaged 7.4 disposals per game throughout the inaugural Aflw season of 2017. Birch is 175 cm tall .[14]

Off field

Birch is an official dual sport Ambassador for School Sports Victoria, assisting students. She is currently studying a double degree in Physiotherapy at Latrobe university[15][16]
