In Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP, Microsoft Sam is the name of the default voice for the screen reader program built into the operating system.
Although Sam is the only one provided with Windows, there are other voices available in other packages like Microsoft Office or Microsoft Reader add-ons, such as Lernout & Hauspie Michael and Lernout & Hauspie Michelle. You may choose which voice you wish to use with the Control Panel's Speech dialog box.
Although Sam is designed to be used with a screen reader for the visually impaired, some find it fun to make him say strange things using the Control Panel dialog, which allows you to hear what each voice sounds like before using it.
In the upcoming Windows Vista, he is to be replaced by Microsoft Anna.
