Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Former Major in the British Army, Patrick "Paddy" Roy Bates on 1 December 1966. The following year Bates moved his pirate radio broadcasting station to HM Fort Roughs (sometimes called Roughs Tower), an abandoned World War II anti Aircraft platform roughly 7 kilometres outside of British Territorial Waters at the time. He had the required equipment to start broadcasting from Roughs Tower, however he never did. On his wife Joan's birthday (2 September 1967), he proclaimed the territory the Principality of Sealand, while proclaiming himself (Prince Roy) as its sovereign.
