The Battle of Voznesensk was a military engagement that occurred as part of the Southern Ukraine offensive during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine in early March 2022.

The city of Voznesensk to the north-west of Mykolaiv was described to be a key area around the Southern Bug river and the defense of the neighboring nuclear power plant.[2]

First Russian assault

During the concurrent pushes into Enerhodar and later Mykolaiv, elements of the Russian 126th Naval Brigade made an advance towards the town of Voznesensk. It was located north-west of Mykolaiv, and offered a route into the neighboring nuclear power-plant. To prepare for the engagement, the mayor of the town, Yevheni Velichko, organized numerous road-blocks with the aid of local businessmen in efforts to deny points of entry to the Russian forces. The Ukrainians then proceeded to blow up a bridge in a continued effort to limit the operational ability of the Russian armored column.[2]

It is stated that the assault began with missile strikes and shelling that damaged several buildings towards the center of the town. The Russian force is claimed to have numbered around 400 men, with an estimated 50 vehicles as part of the column. The Russians enlisted the aid of some local residents to help navigate them through the town, and they set up a base in a gas station in the outskirts of the town. As night descended, the Russians proceeded to make slight pushes, open fire, and retreating to avoid fire. The Ukrainians proceeded to shell their positions and made direct hits at Russian targets. It is reported that the Russians then began to flee, abandoning large amounts of equipment.[2]

Second Russian assault

Russian forces conducted another attack on Voznesensk on 9 March 2022,[3][4] with the fighting continuing into the next day[5] and the Russian military eventually managing to capture the town[1] late in the evening.[6] However, Ukrainian forces recaptured Voznesensk three days later.[1]
