Maguire initially worked as a child actor, beginning in his early teens. He appeared in a variety of commercials and TV and movie roles. One of his first roles was an extra in the 1989 movie The Wizard. He auditioned for a part in the series Parenthood, where he met best friend actor Leonardo DiCaprio (DiCaprio got the part although Maguire would appear as a guest star in later episodes). He then had a small role in This Boy's Life which had DiCaprio in the main role. Maguire gained attention with his role in the 1997 film The Ice Storm, directed by Ang Lee. This soon was parlayed in a variety of lead roles where he played a thoughtful boy coming of age, in films such as Pleasantville, The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys.

Spider-Man role

In 2002, Maguire shot to superstardom in the title role in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man alongside Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe which was based on the popular Marvel comics superhero, where he was praised for his performance as the web-slinging superhero and his alter-ego Peter Parker. He reprised his superhero role in Spider-Man 2, the Academy Award-winning sequel to the original blockbuster, which was released in 2004 and will don the Spider Costume once again in 2007's Spider-Man 3. It is uncertain whether he will return for a fourth instalment.

After Spider-Man

After Spider-Man, he further solidified his stardom in 2003 with a leading role as the jockey John M. "Red" Pollard in the acclaimed film Seabiscuit, about the famous American racehorse Seabiscuit. In 2006, Maguire starred in his first villainous role as Corporal Patrick Tully in Steven Soderbergh's The Good German based on the Joseph Kanon novel of the same name opposite George Clooney and Cate Blanchett.

Personal life

Maguire has been engaged to jewelry maker Jennifer Meyer, daughter of Universal Studios executive Ron Meyer, since April 2006; the pair first began dating in 2003. The couple had hoped to marry before the birth of their first child (a daughter named Ruby Sweetheart Maguire, born November 10, 2006), but were unable to do so due to scheduling difficulties around Maguire's 2006 film projects. Ruby's middle name comes from a nickname given to Jennifer Meyer by a grandmother who passed away several months before Ruby's birth. [1] Photos of Ruby and her parents were published in the January 15, 2007 issue of Us Weekly.

Maguire previously dated actress Rashida Jones and was romantically involved with his Spider-Man co-star Kirsten Dunst during the 2001 filming of the first movie in the series.

In 2004, Maguire took up tournament poker. He has finished in the money in several events and has been tutored by poker professional Daniel Negreanu. Maguire can be seen on ESPN's coverage of the 2005 and 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event Championship.

He wears contact lenses for nearsightedness, is a vegetarian, LA Lakers fan, and also practices yoga.

Spider-Girl #82 has Peter seeing Reilly Tyne/Darkdevil for the first time. While Reilly greatly resembles a younger Peter Parker, Peter himself mistakes Reilly as a dead ringer for Tobey Maguire.
