The execution of Russian soldiers in Makiivka was an incident during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine that occurred in the village of Makiivka. As seen in a viral video, members of Ukrainian armed forces shot at least twelve captured Russian soldiers that were lying on the ground.[1][2][3]
On 19 November, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that the United Nations are aware of the videos and are looking at them.[4] According to the spokesman of the UN Human's Rights Office, "allegations of summary executions of people hors de combat should be promptly, fully and effectively investigated, and any perpetrators held to account".[5]
Reactions
From Russian authorities
Valeriy Fadeyev, Chairman of Russia's Human Rights Council, said that Russia will ask for a reaction and an investigation from the international community.[4]
The Russian defence ministry said the video showed "the deliberate and methodical murder of more than 10 immobilised Russian serviceman by degenerate Ukrainian soldiers". It addedd that this is a new evidence of a massacre of unarmed Russian prisoners of war by Ukrainian military personnel and that this "brutal murder" was not "the first and not the only war crime" committed by Ukrainian forces.[4]
Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, stated that the video shows an “execution" and Russia wants an international investigation.[5] She added that the video showed "further evidence of the crimes of Ukrainian neo-Nazis and Ukraine's flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions". Zakharova demanded that international organisations condemn the crime and conduct a thorough investigation.
