Alain Baraton, born 10 September 1957 in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, is a master gardener. Since 1982, he has been gardener-in-chief of the park at the Palace of Versailles[1]

Alain also works as a writer, television and radio commentator. He speaks regularly on radio France Inter and is the producer of the show La main verte, also broadcast on France Inter.[2]

Career

Alain has been working as a head gardener of the national estate of Trianon and at the park of the Château de Versailles since 1982.[3] In 2009, he has been appointed as the head gardener of the national estate of Marly-le-Roi.[4] At the same time, he writes columns for radio (France Inter since 2003) and television (France 5 since 2014).[5] He has also written numerous books and articles on gardening, plants and versailles.

In 1999, he banned the use of insecticides in the gardens of the Château de Versailles.[6]

In October 2003, he became a member of the National Council of Parks and Gardens (Conseil national des parcs et jardins) as a representative of the Minister of Culture,[7] then again in January 2007 as a qualified personality, chosen for his expertise in the field of parks and gardens.[8]

In April 2006, he was appointed as the national correspondent to the French Academy of Agriculture.[9]

In 2009, he was entrusted with responsibility for the national estate of Marly-le-Roi.[10]

Gardener

In July 1976 he got a seasonal job at the Versailles estate as a cashier at the park entrance[3] where he fell in love with the place and the old trees.[11] Later in September of the same year, he became a trainee assistant gardener.[12]
