Cami Kronish is an American ice hockey goaltender for PWHL Boston of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).[1] Kronish played collegiate ice hockey for the University of Wisconsin, winning a national championship as the Badgers' starting goaltender in 2023.[2]
Early life
Cami Kronish is one of two children of Chris and Ben Kronish; her hometown is New York City, but she attended high school at the North American Hockey Academy (NAHA), a private school which was then located in Stowe, Vermont.[3][2] In Junior Women's Hockey League (JWHL) play, Kronish was a member of the NAHA's U-16 championship team in 2014-2015, and of the NAHA's U-19 championship teams in her final two seasons, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.[2] She was named to the JWHL All-Star team for both U-19 championship seasons, and was the JWHL Goaltender of the Year in 2017-2018.[2]
Collegiate career
Kronish was a member of the University of Wisconsin's women's ice hockey team from 2018-2023, but saw little action in her first four seasons with the Badgers, playing in only six games over that time, and starting only three.[2][4] At the beginning of her senior year, Kronish shared time at goaltender with Jane Gervais, but her success on the ice led to her being designated the team's primary goalie on November 19, 2022, and she started nearly every game for the rest of that season.[5] Kronish's senior season was referred to by one writer as emblematic of the team's "Cinderella story"[5] -- despite her relative inexperience, Kronish's exemplary play as a senior helped the team reach the NCAA Frozen Four in the 2023 national championship tournament, where they ultimately defeated Ohio State University in the championship game, 1-0.[4] Kronish's contributions in the national tournament were recognized both by being named to the all-tournament team and by receiving the tournament's award for the most outstanding performer.[2][4]
Kronish was also celebrated for her academic achievements at the University of Wisconsin, where she was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree for each of her final four seasons as a player.
Professional career
After her graduation in 2023, Kronish signed in June with AIK, a team in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL).[6] She did travel to Sweden, and appeared in one game for AIK,[7] but in October 2023, Kronish accepted a training camp invite from PWHL Boston,[8] and ultimately signed a one-year contract to play for Boston in the PWHL's inaugural season.[9]
