.38 TPC or .38 Taurus Pistol Caliber is a metallic centerfire ammunition that uses smokeless powder, developed by Taurus in partnership with CBC with the aim of providing a caliber to the Brazilian market that meets the new legislation on permitted calibers that established a maximum of 407 joules of energy at the muzzle.[1]

With this caliber, what is intended is an intermediate between the .380 ACP and the 9 mm Luger, generating something between 380 and 400 joules of energy at the muzzle.

As for the cartridge case, it is basically the same as a 9mm Luger "shortened" from 19.15mm to 18.30mm.

History

The project began at the end of 2023, when the government's intention to impose legislation that would limit the energy at the muzzle of the gun had already been announced,[2] which ended up being established at 407 joules (?).[3] It was announced that the new caliber would be 40% more powerful than the current .380 caliber,[2] and with less recoil and also at a lower price than the 9mm.[4]

The official launch of the caliber in Brazil, along with new weapons for it, took place at an event held on June 6, 2024.[5]
