Brother Melchior Polowy CSC (1911-1997) was a Catholic brother who belonged to the Congregation of Holy Cross. He was one of the principal founders of high school wrestling in Louisiana.

The Brother Melchior Society is named after him.[1]

Early life

He was born in Chicago and by trade, was a baker. He decided to entered into his religious life as a Jesuit Brother. Due to a family illness in 1938, he took a leave of absence. After he returned, he decided to enter the Congregation of Holy Cross at St. Joseph's Novitiate in Tolling Prairie, Indiana. He took his vows in 1939.[2]

Wrestling

Brother Melchior and William B. Schriever of the New Orleans Athletic Club (NOAC) brought wrestling to Louisiana.

His teams at Holy Cross High School in New Orlans have won 22 state championships from 1945 to 1968. They only failed once in winning the championship during those years when they did not enter a team in 1951 due to Brother Melchior being ill.

Brother Melchior retired from coaching in 1971.

Death

During the last four years of his life, he almost died on five different occasions. He always wanted to live because: "He felt that God's work for him on earth could be done if he lived."[2]

In November 1997, at the age of 86, Brother Melchior died of pneumonia at Dujane House in Notre Dame, Indiana.
