Synopsis

The film follows Jenna (Keri Russell), a poor southern waitress trapped in an unhappy marriage to a jealous man named Earl (Jeremy Sisto). Whatever turns her life undertakes Jenna reflects in the pies she bakes, and such is the case when she learns of her unexpected pregnancy, and bakes an "I don't want Earl's baby" pie. Jenna longs to run away from her dismal situation, but lacks both the personal strength, and financial means to do so. But, after Jenna meets Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillion), the town's new gynecologist, her life begins to brighten as they start a passionate affair. In the end it's a letter written by Jenna to her unwanted child, that unexpectedly leads her towards a new lease on life, and love.

Sundance Reception

The acceptance of Waitress into the 2007 Sundance Film Festival was bittersweet, since late writer/director Adrienne Shelly did not hear the news before her tragic death. The film opened to glowing critical reviews summarizing it as a well-made, good-hearted comedy, brimming with quality star wattage.[3] [4] 2007 marked a profitable year for the films of Sundance, and Waitress was no exception with Fox Searchlight Pictures acquiring the distribution rights at roughly $4 million. The official release is expected later this year.[5]
