He is a member of the Iona Community and the Christian Socialist Movement. Aitken is married with two young children and lives in Edinburgh.

Following the 2007 local elections, the Scottish Liberal Democrat and Scottish National Party groups have agreed a coalition. This will be the first time in 23 years that Labour has not been involved in Edinburgh's city administration.
