Gene chip technology is a term that refers to several high-throughput methods for measuring mRNA isolated from cells. The experiment is done on a slide that has been created using the photolithography techniques developed for mass production of integrated circuits. Accordingly, the slide is called a "chip". Other aspects of the system include a scanner and statistical software.

Gene chips detect the level of transcripts in a sample of tissue. The level of mRNA is often indicative of gene expression, but can be misleading in some cases.

"GeneChip technology" refers to a trademarked implementation of Microarrays.
