A young boy named Willy and his dog,Searchlight,Find Willy's grandfather laying in bed. He persuades grandfather to get out of bed, but he won't. The town doctor tells willy that his grandfather no longer wants to live. Willy and Searchlight, thinking grandfather is upset about the crops on their farm, decide to care for the plants. Howeaver, grandfather does not get better, and willy knows it wasn't the crops. That night, a man sneaks into Willy's house and, with a rifle in his hand, demands to know how much grandfather owes the state. The person, a tax collector, tells Willy, after seeing some papers, that they owe Wyoming 500 dollars. The next day Willy enters a dog sled race he heard about. The reward happens to be 500 dollars. As Willy is walking down the street, he sees a sled being pulled by five samoyeds(fast dogs used for racing).The man on the sled signs up for the race, and Willy learns it is Stone Fox, an Indian who dosent talk to white people and has never lost a race. In the end, Searchlight's heart bursts, and she dies about 10 feet from finish line. Stone Fox says if any other racers cross the line he made with his boot, he'll shoot them. He then let's Willy win. Grandfather gets better. |
