A Rip Engine is a fictional device from the BBC Doctor Who Novel More Than Human

Not much is known about the Rip Engine save for the fact that it is primitive a mode of Time Travel used by humans from the 26th century. The Rip Engine is said to be a very dangerous mode of time travel since its analogue engine has a propensity to blow up. It also lacks the modern protection elements for time travel that are incorporated into a standard TARDIS and so trips using rip engines are largely one way, since a return trip has been known to cause the atomic structure of the traveller to begin to break down at an exponential rate.

In the Doctor Who Novel More Than Human, the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler encounter a Neanderthal man named Das, who had unwittingly stumbled across a Rip Engine in his own time period and had inadvertently been transported to the early 21st Century.
