In the field of Formation Evaluation, Gamma Ray log records natural radioactivity emmision of a formation. It is normally presented in API units.

Three main natural radioactive sources in earth are Uranium (U), Thorium (Th), and Potassium (K), which is usually contained in shales and clays. Sands on the other hand usually contain little radioactive material. As such, Gamma Ray logs are useful in differentiating shales and sands.

In addition, gamma ray can be used as correlation tool between logging runs, and between wells.
