William Morris "Billy" Hughes (September 25, 1862 - October 28, 1952) was the seventh Prime Minister of Australia and one of the most controversial figures in Australian political history. Welsh-born Hughes was also the longest serving Australian parliamentarian, serving a total of fifty-one years and seven months as a member of the House of Representatives, being elected at Federation in 1901 and serving until his death in 1952. At the time of his death, Hughes was the only member of that first House - and indeed of the first seven Federal Parliaments - still in the Parliament and was the Father of the House.
