The current administration is headed by the Very Reverend William Uren. In recent tmes the increasingly harsh disiplinary methods have caused a large amount of anger between the students club and the administration. Actions taken by the administration have been questioned by the students club, with the feeling that they are disproportionate compared with the infringement, or in complete disregard to normal and proper proceedure. Since the arrival of William Uren the applications for Newman College have fallen sharply due to a decline in the satisfaction current members of the student club have with the administration. This is mainly a result of disreputable old and current memebers of the college advising against future applications. As a result the administration has sought to limit old members of the college from endeavouring to debase Newman's academic standing.

Newman College is a Roman Catholic, co-educational residential college affiliated with the University of Melbourne. During the university year it houses about 230 undergraduate students, and about 30 postgraduate students and tutors. The college was named after Cardinal John Henry Newman, a former Anglican and major figure in the Oxford Movement, who became a Roman Catholic in the 19th century. The College continues to commemorate the life of John Henry, Cardinal Newman, through events such as the Cardinal Newman Dinner, and the prominent portrayal of his portrait in the Dining Hall. Although most strongly affiliated with the University of Melbourne, a sizeable number of undergraduate students attend either the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University) or the Melbourne Pharmacy School, part of Monash University despite being located in Parkville on Royal Parade.

The collegiate system spawned from the secular nature of the University, as each of the major Christian faiths was given land to the north of the main campus to establish institutions in which to teach religion. The college motto is 'Luceat Lux Vestra', translating from Latin as 'Let Your Light Shine'.

The original set of buildings were built during 1916 to 1918 and were designed by architect Walter Burley Griffin and are believed to be some of his best work.

This was recognised by the grant of a National Heritage Listing on September 21 2005, citing "the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's importance in the course, or pattern, of Australia's natural or cultural history." The stonework is currently receiving substantial renovation to repair over 80 years of damage through exposure and natural degradation of the original stone.

At its opening the administration of the college was entrusted to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) who continue its administration to the present day. As of January 2006 the new Rector of the college is Father Bill Uren SJ, a former Chaplain and Rector (1987-1990) of Newman. He replaced the Very Reverend Peter L'Estrange SJ, who held the position from 1991 and is now Master of Campion Hall, Oxford.

Students' Club

All undergraduate members of Newman College are accepted into the Newman College Students' Club, a self governed organisation which runs day-to-day events in the college. An executive committee (the General Committee) is elected yearly and appoints committees with specific responsibilities. These are:

The college places a strong emphasis on participation in co-curricular activities, with music, the dramatic arts and sport playing a large role in college life. The 2007 college production is the Australian classic, 'Dimboola', written by an ex-Collegian, Jack Hibberd. Traditionally, Newman has enjoyed success in the inter-collegiate Australian Rules Football competition, and are the current premiers, following the First XVIII's victory over St. Hilda's in the 2006 Grand Final.

Current Administration

The current administration is headed by the Very Reverend William Uren. In recent times, disiplinary actions have aroused anger of the students club towards the administration. Actions taken by the administration have been questioned by certain outspoken members of the students club, asserting that they are disproportionate to the infringement, or in complete disregard to normal and proper proceedure. Since the arrival of William Uren, applications for Newman College have fallen sharply due to disreputable members of the college advising prospective members against future application. As a result, the administration has sought to dissuade old members of the college from debasing Newman's academic mission and standing.
