Tournament information

The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Light Heavyweight Championship was a professional wrestling championship. The title was challenged by light heavyweights at a maximum weight of 215 lbs.

History

The WWE Light Heavyweight Championship, originaly known as the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship, was first introduced in Mexico for the Universal Wrestling Association. It eventually migrated to Japan as well, although it wasn't considered as an official WWF title until after 1997, when a tournament was held in the United States to crown a champion. Before the tournament, the title was a part of the J-Crown.

Title unification

In March 2001, World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. purchased World Championship Wrestling. During the Invasion angle which followed, the WCW Cruiserweight Championship and the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship were unified when the WWF Light Heavyweight Champion, X-Pac, defeated the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Billy Kidman. However, the titles remained separate. After the Invasion, the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship was deactivated in favour of the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, which was renamed as the WWF Cruiserweight Championship.[1]
