Henry Marlowe Middle School is home to approximately 1,100 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from the Huntley and Lake in the Hills area. The school opened in August of 2005 and has completed its' addition.

The school was named after Henry Marlowe who was known as the “Father of Agriculture” in the Huntley area. Mr. Marlowe was a former teacher in the Huntley School District as well as the founder of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) in District #158. He was also a prominent businessman in the community running the Marlowe Feed Mill for many years. He brought many great experiences to the students, staff and community of Huntley and we are very proud to have our Middle School named in his honor.

Currently, the staff at Marlowe Middle School consists of two administrators, 65 certified teachers, two counselors, 2 social worker's, school psychologist, school nurse and over twenty support staff including administrative assistants, teacher aides, custodial services and cafeteria personnel.

The Middle School Philosophy is a huge part of the climate and culture of Marlowe Middle School. There students are arranged on teams where they receive instruction from five core teachers and one special education teacher. They also have an advisory period with one of their core teachers and/or band and chorus daily. Students receive three quarters of PE each year and one quarter of Health. They also take four different nine-week exploratory classes throughout the school year that may include Art, Computers, Technology Lab, Foods and Nutrition, Drama, Speech Spanish, Art 2, Chiniese, and Science Lab.

With the completion of the new addition on the building and the ever increasing population we are currently in the process of reviewing curriculum options.

History

Name History

Henry Marlowe was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was Huntley's first agriculture teacher, teaching from 1931 to 1951. Mr. Marlowe and his wife, Helen, founded Marlowe Feed & Hatchery which operated in Huntely for 60 years. He later served as a school board member.

However, there was some tension in naming this school and others.

In Cary, renaming a middle school became a community-wide debate in 2002 when the District 26 school board voted to re-name Cary Junior High after the district’s retiring superintendent, Tim Kelly. Students signed petitions opposing the name change and parents spoke out against it because they wanted the school to retain the name that it had had for 30 years, they said.

The school board changed the name back to Cary Junior High two months later.

But in 2005, Huntley District 158 opened four new schools named after local figures without controversy -- Mackeben Elementary School, Marion Conley Elementary School, Bernice Heineman Middle School and Henry Marlowe Middle School.

“The name of a school should reflect what’s important to the community, and if that’s an individual then that’s OK,” Wright said.

Joe Weyland, a Woodstock resident on the District 200 School Name Committee, said he agreed that people’s names should be considered.

"The school was named after Henry Marlowe who was known as the “Father of Agriculture” in the Huntley area. Mr. Marlowe was a former teacher in the Huntley School District as well as the founder of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) in District #158. He was also a prominent businessman in the community running the Marlowe Feed Mill for many years. He brought many great experiences to the students, staff and community of Huntley and we are very proud to have our Middle School named in his honor."- District 158

“That's why we're here: To retain the history of this community and to make sure that it is kept up,” he said. ---Northwest Herald;Article:Name that school,School name a touchy subject.

Marlowe Middle School officially opened on Sunday, April 17, 2005. Marlowe Family members watched as School Board President Mike Skala cut the ribbon.

Teams

Each grade at MMS is divided into teams. The team students and teachers bond throughout the year. These teams have a teacher for each course subject.(Language Arts, Mathematics, Special Needs...) For example, the 6th grade teams are team 6-1, and team 6-2, and 6-3. Each of them have a specific horse mascot, though they are the only grade that did this. The 6th grade teams are grouped together in the left are of the school, by the bus doors. The 7th grade teams are grouped together in the back center. The 8th grade teams are divided. The 8th grade is on the right side of the building.
