The Jungle Book (official title is "Disney's Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book") is a 1994 film, by Disney, loosely based on the Mowgli stories in The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. It could also be seen as a live action remake of their hit The Jungle Book (1967) or the earlier film The Jungle Book (1942). The film stars Jason Scott Lee as Mowgli and Cary Elwes as his main adversary, directed by Stephen Sommers. The original music score is composed by Basil Poledouris. Unlike the novel and earlier adaptations, none of the animal characters talk.
Tagline: Born by man, raised by animals, destined for adventure.
Plot summary
In the Victorian period, Mowgli is the five-year-old-son of a wilderness guide who accompanies his father on a hunting trip in the jungles of their native India. Mowgli becomes close friends with a British girl named Katherine Anne "Kitty" Brydon, whose parents commissioned the hunt, but when a tiger attacks the camp and kills Mowgli's father, the boy is lost in the confusion, and he is left to fend for himself. Mowgli is befriended by the animals of the jungle — Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, and Grey Brother the wolf — and they develop an unspoken sense of communication as the growing boy learns to live in the wild.
Years later, after growing to adulthood, Mowgli once again encounters Kitty, who is visiting India with her father, Colonel Geoffrey Brydon, a British officer stationed nearby, and her arrogant and deceitful fiancé Captain William Boone. Kitty and Mowgli recognize each other, and while his powers of speech are rusty, with the help of Dr. Julius Plumford, Kitty and her father are able to reintroduce Mowgli to civilization. However, after spending most of his life in the jungle, Mowgli does not feel at home among other people, and while he deeply loves Kitty, he concedes to his rival for her affections. However, Boone and several other men kidnap Mowgli when they learn that he has discovered a vast treasure in the jungle, and they try to force him to reveal his secrets while fending off the dangers of the jungle which Mowgli understands, but Boone and his men do not.
