Devourment

Devourment is an American brutal death metal band from Dallas, Texas. They were formed in 1995 by the members of death metal band, Necrocide (neither of which remain in the band). They are credited for being the creators of a sub-genre of death metal known as slam death metal.

History

After the demise of Necrocide, Brad Fincher and Braxton Henry, hooked up with vocalist Wayne Knupp with the intention of forming a death metal band with no limitations in regards to sheer brutality. The trio released a two-song promo. Braxton soon left the band in order to focus on another project. He was replaced by Brian Wynn. Guitarist Kevin Clark and bassist Mike Majeweski were also hired. They released a demo entitled 'Impaled' in 1997.

The band had once again lost a member as Wayne Knupp decided to leave the band. After a long search, vocalist Reuban Rosas was recruited. He had previously played in local band Detrimental. After releasing two more demos, they finally released their first full length in 1999 called Molesting the Decapitated through the United Guttural record label. It was engineered by former member Braxton Henry. The album is considered to be highly influential in the brutal and slam death Metal genres and is considered a cult classic.

However Rosas was soon arrested, forcing the band to be temporarily put on hold. The band reformed with Knupp and Henry rejoining the band. They recorded a new song called Babykiller. The track appeared on their compilation entitled 1.3.8., released in 2000. The band releases a single called Kill That Fucking Bitch in 2002. They split up soon after. Reuben was released from prison after serving his 2 1/2 year sentence and tried to reform the band. He recruited a few members and played some shows but did not manage to do anything of any significance.

A few years later, the band finally decided to reform with Reuben Rosas and Mike Majewski. Eric Park was hired on drums. The band self-released their second full length in 2005 entitled Butcher the Weak. Bassist Chris Andrews joined the ranks with Majewski switching to vocal duties. Despite the critical success of their second album, the band was not satisfied with the output and in May 2006, they began re-recording it. In August 2006, they released the album through Brutal Bands Records, after signing a two album deal with them. Devourment have since, played various shows and festivals and remains active to this day.

On September 15, 2007, original singer, Wayne Knupp passed away due to multiple organ failure, caused by years of alcohol abuse brought on by severe personal traumas and an incurable disease he suffered most of his life.[1]
