History

The program signed on on July 31st, 2006 on flagship station WKTU, launching into syndication two weeks later.

Wake Up With Whoopi airs from 5am - 9am local time (live on the East Coast) in several markets. At its peak, the program was heard on four of the top six major markets (New York's WKTU, Chicago's WLIT, San Francisco's KKSF and Philadelphia's WISX); none of those stations carry the show anymore. As of December 2007, Denver, Las Vegas and Raleigh are the largest markets carrying the show along with four very small market stations; all of the stations are owned by Clear Channel Communications. Flagship station WKTU dropped the program in November 2007; while the show remains on the air on a shrinking number of affiliates; its long term future is in doubt.

Whoopi Goldberg has signed on with ABC's The View as moderator; she will be doing both the radio show and the TV program.

The program was produced by longtime WKTU morning show producer Michael Opelka until he left the show and the company, ending nearly 10 years of his affiliation with the station. All published reports point to an amicable parting.
