"My Way or the Highway" is the 20th episode of the American sitcom Scrubs. It originally aired as Episode 20 of Season 1 on April 16, 2002.

Plot
The episode begins with a direct parody of West Side Story with the surgical vs. medical scene. J.D. is annoyed that Turk's games always end up with him winning. In return he wants to play "knock over the garbage can" much to the annoyance of the janitor. Elliot's patient, Mr. Sean Kelly, immediately attracts her. Dr. Cox doesn't like that J.D. gave Mr. Hoffner lots of medical options, including surgical. However, he is really happy with the coffee made by a special nurse even though Carla mentions Dr. Kelso has just fired two nurses.

Elliot flirts with Sean on the cardiograph and finds out he is single. Dr. Cox tells Dr. Kelso it was wrong to fire two good nurses. In turn Bob fires the coffee nurse and Carla blames Perry for arguing with him. Elliot takes Carla away and asks why Sean didn't ask her out, even though she told him she was single. Carla tells her to wait and see what happens but shortly afterwards he gets released.

Turk advises Mr. Hoffner to do the surgery but J.D. isn't happy about it. Mr. Hoffner goes with the surgery. J.D. goes to talk to Perry but he has enough trouble getting the nurses to talk to him. So J.D. talks to Mr. Hoffner himself and he says he made the decision himself, based on advice from other people such as the janitor.

At the cafeteria, Dr. Cox wants to know why Bob fired the coffee nurse. Bob says it was because he gave him lip in front of his interns and it was a personal thing. Elliot is dressed up and wants to ask out Sean. Just then Laverne gets her to help with one of her patients. She returns messy and Sean talks to her anyway.

At rounds, Dr. Cox apologizes for earlier and that no innocent nurse should suffer because of their personal problems. Dr. Kelso makes Perry apologize again so all the interns hear it. J.D. doesn't like Turk taking his patient due to competition but Turk says you have to be confident in front of your patients. Dr. Kelso re-hires coffee nurse. Elliot runs out and catches Sean just before he leaves. Unfortunately she also gets a puddle of muddy water from a drive-by car. Sean says he didn't ask her out because the situation was awkward at the hospital, so he does it now. Elliot is excited to have a date.

J.D. finally persuades a patient to get treatment instead of surgery, and the episode ends with a wheelchair race between surgical and medical.
