A minority view held by some in the [[Republic of Macedonia]], and possibly elsewhere, is that Mihailov once treated the [[Macedonians (ethnic group)|Macedonian people]] as culturally distinct from the [[Bulgarians|Bulgarian people]] but had adopted a pro-Bulgarian position following the [[Second World War]], and indeed for the greater part of his life. Bulgarian historians however have consistently treated him as being ethnically Bulgarian and somewhat of a national hero and deny or tend to discount any statements he may have made referring to any such cultural distinctiveness. |
