U.S. Case Designate "Cloverfield", the as of yet unnamed monster, is a fictional monster, introduced in Cloverfield, a 2008 film from Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions.[2]

Character background

Before the monster attacks New York City, it is seen emerging from the harbor of a Japanese city. The monster's appearance coincides with the emotional breakdown of a high school student in the town, Kishin.[3]

Physical description

The monster is approximately 500 ft in height and has large teeth and pale skin.[4] On the sides of its neck are red sacs, seen inflating and deflating in the movie. The creature has four pairs of limbs, with the largest being the most anterior pair. The elbow joint points in the anterior direction, as opposed to posterior in humans. The upper arms are significantly longer than the forearms.

The creature is a fist-walker, and crawls on all fours throughout most of the film, although it is portrayed with the ability to stand up in a bipedal fashion. It also has the ability to jump high distances. It has a long tail.

According to human witnesses, the creature is willing to consume humans for food. Its mouth is large enough to consume a human whole in a single bite. A tongue can be seen.

The creature has a high resistance to projectile weaponry. Shells from M-1 tanks, AT-4 rockets, and Mk 82 bombs (and possible Nuclear Missiles) failed to do any long term damage to the creature.[4]

Parasites

The monster plays host to numerous smaller creatures, which are shown dropping from its body and attacking civilians and Army personnel. Pre-production artist sketches indicate that the creators were attempting to portray arthropod-like creatures unrelated to the monster itself, as unused designs for the creatures resembled crustaceans[citation needed]. The official Cloverfield toy refers to them as "parasites."[5]

Within the film, the creatures are about the size of a large dog with green eyes and tan/gray skin. They attack using claws and jowels. Bites from these creatures bleed profusely and show no signs of clotting. The bite from these smaller creatures also appears to cause a strong reaction in humans causing the victim's torso to explode. Humans who are bitten have been seen being set aside in containment by hazmat teams.

They are exceptionally aggressive and make a series of varying noises. Agile and extremely quick, they are seen crawling on the ceiling of a subway tunnel in the dark, stalking prey. During and after one of the attacks, one character commented that he was apparently being dragged away by the parasites.

Toy figure

The Cloverfield monster will be produced in toy form by Hasbro. It will be 14" tall and come with the head of the Statue of Liberty and 10 of the smaller creatures, which Hasbro calls "parasites."[5] The figure will also reproduce the monster's roar.[6]
