Malaysian Jews

Shalom Imran (your Hebrew name would have been ‘Amram). According to Jewish law, a Gentile can convert to Judaism, but a Jew can never stop being Jewish (even if he converts to another religion). A Jew is defined by matrilineal descent (i.e. if one's mother is Jewish, he is a full Jew). If only his mother’s mother was Jewish, he is still Jewish. In fact, if there one can prove a matrilineal descent for any number of generations that would mean that this person is a halakhic Jew. The implications of that are that there are at least several hundred million people in the world that are Jewish although they may be unaware of it (since there were at least 5 million Jews two thousand years ago). Of course, this person would still be required to convert to be considered Jewish by the Jewish community, unless he can actually prove the matrilineal descent. That is the case of the Bnei Menashe or Falashmura who despite their avowed Jewish origin were required to undergo a full conversion in order to be able to join the Jewish community in Israel and be able to marry there. It is possible that you are Jewish, but being a Jew means keeping 613 Torah commandments and is probably nearly impossible in Malaysia. According to Jewish belief, with the coming of Messiah, all people who are halakhically Jewish will realize that and be gathered from the four corners of the earth to the Land of Israel. Until then, Islamic belief is in agreement with Judaism on most things, and one can be a righteous Gentile and have a blessed and good life.
