Goldenview Middle School is a middle school for grades 7 and 8 located in Anchorage, Alaska with roughly 1000 students. Part of the Anchorage School District, Goldenview opened in 1997 after two years of construction and a total cost of $39 million. The school's name is derived from its panoramic “Golden View” that encompasses Cook Inlet, Redoubt Volcano, Flattop Mountain and Mount McKinley. As of 2004-5, 52 teachers teach at Goldenview. The current principal is Julie Maker. The school mascot is the Sun.
Pod system
Goldenview Middle School is divided into seven 'pods' or 'teams', which are named after scientific terms and chemical elements.
All pods consist of three or four teachers, specializing in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math. Language Arts and Science both have gifted and non-gifted classes, and Math classes are divided into Math 7, Pre-Algebra Math 8, Algebra, and provisionally Geometry and Algebra II and Trigeometry. Each pod ranges in size from 80 to 120 students, and classrooms for each pod and lockers for each pod's students are physically consolidated. The current 7th grade teams are Cobalt, Helium, & Silver. The current 8th grade teams are Cosmos, Neon, Xenon, & Copper.
