Tsipori was the largest and most important city in Galilee in the first four centuries A.D. Legend attributes its name to the Hebrew word 'tsipor' -- bird. Tsipori was a great spiritual center in the life of Israel. It was home to Talmudic scholars, the most famous of which was Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi who compiled and edited the Mishna.
