Mendoza is known to use seven aliases for his writing. The only one that has surfaced is Alan "Scoop Stevens." The psuedynm was first used by Mendoza in 1998 as a music columnist in D-Town, a regional San Diego newspaper. The name was next used starting in 2001 when he began writing for SLAAM Magazine. When that magazine was acquired by Citybeat in 2002, Mendoza kept the Stevens tag to pen the Citybeat column "Locals Only" from 2003-2007. Concurrently, he wrote the "NightLife" column for Night & Day under his own name from 1999-2003.

As a songwriter, he has written songs that many artists have covered including Canada's Kingpins "Plan Of Action", the Lola's "I Cant Dont Want To," The Eddies "Jungle Beat," Glowfriends "Blindspot", with "Survive" (co-written with Jeppe Riddervold) winning first place in the 2003 EMI Publishing Awards held in Berlin.

On the production side of music, he handles all of Rachael Gordon's musical dealings and works with other bands on their recording projects. Since 2006 he has worked closely with guitarist Anna Troy, filling in on guitar with her band regularly. He rarely plays solo, but can often be found sitting in with San Diego area artists, notably, The Spring Collection, Static Halo, Marie Haddad, Dave Humphries and Four Eyes front man Mark DeCerbo.

His day jobs have generally been music related including stints at record stores, Licorice Pizza, The Wherehouse and Off the Record. He also spent 11 years working for Capitol Records and moonlighted for Chrysalis, Angel, Enigma, EMI, Rhino, SBK, amongst others.
