Mark Carruthers is a radio and television journalist with BBC Northern Ireland. He presents Let's Talk, an audience-and-panel format programme pitched at the NI television region, and the drive-time programme Evening Extra on BBC Radio Ulster.

Carruthers was born in Limavady in 1965 and educated at Queen's University, Belfast, graduating in political science in 1987, and with a Master's degree in Irish politics in 1989. He is married with children. Beyond politics, he is a passionate advocate of the arts and serves on the boards of the Lyric Theatre and the Ireland Romania Cultural Foundation. He is co-editor, with Stephen Douds, of Stepping Stones: The Arts in Ulster 1971-2001, published by Blackstaff Press in 2001.

Broadcasting work

Mark joined BBC Northern Ireland in 1989. Since then he has presented countless news and current affairs programmes on both television and radio. His present commitments include BBC Newsline, Let's Talk, Spotlight and Evening Extra. He was nominated for a prestigious Royal Television Society award for his work in 2003. He recently presented a series of special television reports from tsunami-stricken Sri Lanka.

Trivia

• He is chairman of the Board of the Lyric Players' Theatre Belfast
• He was one of the first recipients of drama honours at Coleraine Academical Institution. Ironically, one of his classmates, the now renowned actor James Nesbitt, did not.
