Main characters

Alto Saotome (早乙女アルト, Saotome Aruto)

Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura (seiyū)

• Age: 17

A high school student in the Mihoshi Academy Pilot Training course. As a result of his fine features and long hair he is often mistaken for a girl at first glance, even receiving the nickname 'Hime' (Princess). Despite his appearance, he is otherwise a rather normal boy, though somewhat aloof and standoffish. Born into a well-known Kabuki family, his persistent yearning for the skies has made for a thorny relationship with his father. Alto is now undertaking pilot courses at Mihoshi Academy. He is constantly fretting about living aboard Macross Frontier. After getting the chance to pilot the VF-25 Messiah variable fighter (due to its original pilot Henry Gilliam being killed by a large type Vajra) his flying skills bring the attention of Ozma Lee, who accepts him as a candidate for the S.M.S. Skull Squadron.

Ranka Lee (ランカ・リー, Ranka Rī)

• Age: 16

A short, lively and cheerful, although naive, green-haired girl. The adopted younger sister of SMS ace Ozma Lee, she attends a girl's high school at the urging of her brother while working part-time in the Chinese restaurant "Nyan-Nyan". Ranka is a huge fan of Sheryl Nome, and got tickets to her concert from her brother as a big favor. She loves singing since her childhood and dreams to become a singer. She is one-quarter Zentradi, which gives her the ability to have her hair move on its own according to her feelings, as well as having an above-average resistance to space vacuum.[1] Ranka also suffers from dissociative amnesia following a Vajra attack on the 117th Large Scale Research Fleet that led to the loss of her family (as well as nearly 1000 other people) when she was only 4 years old, becoming one of the few survivors of that incident. One of her only memories from childhood is a song called "Aimo". Her idol, Sheryl Nome has recognized Ranka's singing talent and encourages her to pursue her dreams. Ranka becomes close friends with Alto Saotome after he saves her from a Vajra attack.

Sheryl Nome (シェリル・ノーム, Sheriru Nōmu)

Voiced by: Aya Endo, singing voice: May'n

• Age: 17

Known as the "Galactic Fairy", she is a pop idol from Macross Galaxy fleet. She constantly tops music charts, and it is said that it is impossible not to hear her songs if you live in this galaxy. Naturally, her popularity is soaring high in Galaxy's sister fleet, Frontier. Due to her beauty and singing talent. She is a very proud and self-assured person. Sheryl has recognized the singing talent of Ranka Lee and often offers to help her 'behind the scenes' to realize her dream of singing. Sheryl's first encounter with Alto Saotome was when he served as a backup 'performer' at her first fleet concert. She later develops an interest in him after he saved her life from a Vajra attack and often sneaks away from her handlers to meet up with him.

Mihoshi Academy

Michael Blanc (ミハエル・ブラン, Mihaeru Buran)

Alto's classmate and friendly rival. He is an excellent marksman, and his motto is to always acquire his targets, be it an enemy or a woman—maintaining his reputation as a considerable ladies' man. He is the originator of Alto's nickname, "Princess Alto". Aside from leading a normal school life, he is also the 2nd Lieutenant of the S.M.S. Skull Squadron and pilots a blue VF-25G (gunner/sniper version). He initially expresses doubt over Alto joining the Skull Squadron, but later accepts him. For normal daily life he wears corrective glasses. Childhood friend of Klan Klien. He also has a nickname which is Michelle.

Luca Angelloni (ルカ・アンジェローニ, Ruka Anjerōni)

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

Alto and Michael's junior classmate. He is often frustrated with his seniors, who like to give him a hard time. He is a genius with computers and military electronics. As with Michael, he is a member of the S.M.S. Skull Squadron. He pilots a green RVF-25 (reconnaissance version). His fighter is custodied by three pet Ghost Drones (which he calls Simon, Johanne and Pietro) that respond to his verbal commands.

Nanase Matsuura (松浦 ナナセ, Matsuura Nanase)

Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima

Another classmate of Alto, Michael and Luca, Matsura is also Ranka's friend. A shy and quiet girl, she also works in the same "Nyan-Nyan" restaurant as Ranka and supports her dream of becoming a singer.

Civilian Military Provider S.M.S. (Strategic Military Services)

Ozma Lee (オズマ・リー, Ozuma Rī)

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi

The top ace in the S.M.S. private military company and leader of Skull squadron. A former N.U.N.S. pilot, he has plenty of combat experience backing him up. He also seems to be a fan of Fire Bomber, as one of their songs has been heard over his car radio at least once and because of the fact that he called one of Skull Squadron's battle formations after another one of their songs ("Planet Dance"). Although laid-back and careless on the outside, he knows when to be serious, and believes that the real duty of a soldier is to care for his subordinates and civilians. He is somewhat overprotective of his sister Ranka Lee, and lies to her about his work so she will not worry about him, telling her he has a desk job in a company's personnel department. He is actually unrelated to Ranka by blood and is only her adopted brother, constantly blaming himself for the failure of protecting her real family during a Vajra attack on the 117th Large Scale Research Fleet 11 years ago.

Kanaria Berstein (カナリア・ベルシュタイン, Kanaria Berushutain)

First lieutenant in the S.M.S. and the pilot of Skull Team's VB-6 König Monster variable bomber. Although she rarely speaks, when she does her words have great weight and she often advises Ozma. She also serves as a military medic for S.M.S.

Klan Klien (クラン・クラン, Kuran Kuran)

Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi

A blue-haired Zentradi female (Meltrandi) who is part of the all-female S.M.S. Pixie Squadron, with the rank of captain. Childhood friend of Michel Blanc. Also, she is a top ace Queadluun-Rea power-armor pilot. Due to a certain genetic anomaly, she is a young Zentradi woman while in macronized form, however she becomes both physically and mentally a juvenile when micronized (reduced to human size). This makes her a perfect target for Michael's mockery.

Nene Rora (ネネ・ローラ, Nene Rōra)

A tall (by Zentradi standards) pink-haired Meltlandi who is part of the all-female S.M.S. Pixie Squadron. A calm, gentle and kind character.

Raramia Rerenia (ララミア・レレニア)

A red-haired Meltlandi who is part of the all-female S.M.S. Pixie Squadron. A boyish looking young woman with an intense gaze.

Jeffrey Wilder (ジェフリー・ワイルダー, Jefurī Wairudā)

Voiced by: Tōru Ōkawa

Captain of SMS Macross Quarter. A colonel in the S.M.S. ranks, he used to be a pilot in an U.N. Forces aircraft carrier early on his career. A seasoned veteran, he has a beard and a horizontal scar across his face as proof of his previous combat experience. Though a very polite officer, he can become highly mischievous when the situation requires it.

Bobby Margot (ボビー・マルゴ, Bobī Marugo)

Voiced by: Kenta Miyake

Highly skilled helmsman of the S.M.S mothership, SMS Macross Quarter. Somewhat stern in appearance, he is "just like a girl inside", as he often says. He was a hair stylist somewhere in the past. He is well-liked by female crew members for his good understanding of others. He's a gay man and has secret feelings for Ozma. Tends to constantly critize N.U.N.S. actions in a regular basis. Apparently very feminine, calm and soft-spoken during peace time, can become quite serious, daring and agressive during combat.

Monica Lange (モニカ・ラング, Monika Rangu)

Voiced by: Rie Tanaka

One of the bridge operators of SMS Macross Quarter. In charge of the main search radar and chief of the main operator group, she has a serious leader personality type.

Mina Roshan (ミーナ・ローシャン, Mīna Rōshan)

Voiced by: Aya Hirano

One of the bridge operators of SMS Macross Quarter. Currently in charge of internal warship status management. Despite having an IQ of 180, she sometimes has trouble in adjusting to the pace of her fellow teammates. She is proud of her high level of intelligence.

Ram Hoa (ラム・ホア, Ramu Hoa)

Voiced by: Kaori Fukuhara

One of the bridge operators of SMS Macross Quarter. In charge of communication and main weapons control. A person of not too many words that tends to classify everything that she comes into contact in a regular basis.

A pilot in the S.M.S. Skull Team and Ozma Lee's second in command. He lost his life while defending the Macross Frontier fleet in the Vajra attack of 2059. His valkyrie fighter is succeeded by Alto.

The mysterious Zentradi looking owner of the S.M.S. Civilian Military Provider Company. Has multiple artificial implants in his body and some of them enable him to receive telephone calls directly into his left ear.

Cathy Glass (キャシー・グラス, Kyashī Gurasu)

Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi

• Age: 23

A N.U.N.S. General Staff second lieutenant attached to the Macross Frontier, she is also the President's daughter. A good thinker, she has both brain and looks. After having graduating from university with honors, she joined NUNS and is being fast-tracked into the elite. A very competent officer, she sometimes lacks flexibility. In the Miss Macross contest, she would be placed on a championship level (she was actually a runner-up on the 8th contest). Currently in a relationship with Leon Mishima without her father's knowledge. Was formerly in a relationship with Ozma Lee. She became part of the SMS Macross Quarter crew during a mission to rescue the Macross Galaxy fleet from the Vajra.

Howard Glass (ハワード・グラス, Hawādo Gurasu)

The president of the New United Nations Government and also the administrative director of the Macross Frontier fleet. His administration was responsible for the creation of the Frontier colony fleet. As president, he shoulders all political decisions to ensure the security and well-being of his citizens.

Leon Mishima (レオン・三島, Reon Mishima)

Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita

The President's aide. An ever calm and composed man, he is President Glass' close associate. He is a constant source of all political trends and winds, and is in a relationship with Cathy Glass.

Captain Wilen (ウィラン大尉, Wiran Taii)

N.U.N.S. pilot from the Macross Galaxy fleet.

Others

Brera Sterne (ブレラ・ストーン, Burera Sutōn)

Voiced by: Sōichirō Hoshi

The mysterious pilot of the crimson VF-27 variable fighter that Alto Saotome encounters in a Vajra carrier. He seems to know how to play the first part of Ranka's song "Aimo" using his harmonica.

Grace O'Connor (グレイス・オコナー, Gureisu Okonā)

Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue

Sheryl's manager. A person with a gentle and calm attitude. She often upsets her employer despite having considerable abilities. It is later revealed that Grace has bio-mechanical implants that allow her to digitally record certain images into her mind, as well as receive cellphone calls directly into her right ear.

Ranzou Saotome (早乙女 嵐蔵, Saotome Ranzō)

Alto's father and the 18th sōke of the Saotome family. A very strict person, he has trained his son harshly since young.

Elmo Kridanik (エルモ・クリダニク, Erumo Kuridaniku)

Voiced by: Tōru Ōkawa

The president manager of the small talent agency "Vector Productions". He heard Ranka's singing by chance and scouted her.
