Hi there! Thank you for you kind note on my user page. I've seen you about before but didn't realize you were Rotuman. I've just spent the last hour perusing some of your articles, adding categories and cross-links to other articles, etc. I found them extremely interesting, and look forward to seeing many more contributions from you. When I joined Wikipedia in early 2004, there were a total of eight (8) articles that mentioned Fiji, and only one that mentioned Rotuma. Can you believe it? For a couple of years, I worked almost alone to create a corpus of articles about Fiji - more than 500, in fact. I began to wonder whether anybody else was ever going to come on board. Xorkl000, Girmitya, Laulad, and now yourself, have helped breath new life into the project. There are still huge gaps in our coverage of Fiji (compared to most English-speaking countries), and the people, villages, customs, geography, and history of Rotuma and its outliers really need an expert contributor. I'm so glad to see you here, and look forward to working with you. If you are willing, I'd encourage you to join WikiProject Fiji (just follow the link and sign up). I promise you, nobody will pressure you to write anything - but it will mean that you'll be a valued member of our team and anything you contribute will be integrated with everyone else's. Welcome! Hi there! It's good to hear from you again, Matt. Don't apologize for being "such a keen newbie" - we need more people with that kind of passion for the project! I'll have a look in a moment at the articles you created - thanks! And no, cited sources don't have to be on the net. You can cite books and newspaper articles (you need to name the author, chapter, etc.). Have a great day, and God bless you also! David Cannon 09:19, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello again! Just a query about Penaia Kadavulevu. I see the article indicates that he reigned from 1901 to 1914 - and several external sources seem to confirm that - but you also say that he was a member of the legislative council in the 1920s. If he was still alive, was he no longer the vunivalu - or is the date simply wrong? Just wondering. David Cannon 09:52, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi. What seems to be the problem? misanthrope 07:42, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Solkope
Hi Matt! There has been a long dispute over several pages having to do with the DOM Scam, including your home island of Solkope. Someone has been coordinating a propaganda campaign to try to legtimize DOM by pushing their point of view (POV) in the articles related to it. I have no problem with something being written, if it is indeed not pushing the DOM POV. There is so much history to the whole thing that it would take a long time to go through.

When you visit the article for Solkope, you can click on the tab that says "history" and go through it and look at all the edits (I'm sure you know this as it looks like you've been active for awhile). That will help you see what was done in the past. There was also an arbitration case against the person in question and you can find that by going to the main article about DoM and looking at the talk page. I'd encourage you to read the main article about DoM as there is some useful information and sources you could use to cite for the Solkope article.

You might also seek out help from Gene Poole, as he is pretty knowledgeable about micronations in general. I've read quite a bit specifically on DoM and have a bunch of articles bookmarked on my computer. The general consensus is that Wikipedia should not be used to legitimize DoM and that's what we are trying to protect against.

By the way, I am also a pretty big fan of Barrack Obama. I'm not 100% sure if I'll support him, but I'm definately leaning that direction. In a way I'm still praying that Gore gets in the race and knocks Hillary Clinton senseless (not that she ever had any in the first place). It will be interesting to see what happens though.

Let me know if you need help. I'm not around as much as I used to be, but I'll check in from time to time to see what's going on. Also make sure to sign your posts with ~~~~ when you put a comment on a talk page so people know who you are. Davidpdx 11:26, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

:I added something about Rotuma to this article version:

however, Davidpdx reverted it. Perhaps it you rewrite the relevant paragraph under heading Mark Logan Pedley it will be more accurate and more acceptable to Davidpdx and others. I agree with you that these are historical events and should be covered in the Solkope and Rotuma articles. Harvardy 00:47, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey thanks for the nice reply. And you're right, there is a lot of work needed on Pacific articles generally - not only under-represented, but often laden with mistakes, so keep up the good work.

By the way, seeing how interested in Fiji you are, there is a group of articles about Fijian traditional religion that I was going to look at fixing, but it was a bit out of my area of knowledge. They are Bulu (Fijian mythology), Degei etc - most of the articles in this category: :Category:Fijian mythology. The articles seem to have been copied from Encyclopedia Mythica and are garbled, as is usual with Encyclopedia Mythica. I tracked down what looks to me like the ultimate source: Chapter VII of Fiji and the Fijians, an old book which is available online as a PDF . It might be worth a look (you can download it), and being so old there are no copyright issues. Kahuroa 19:26, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Matt - you wrote: Thanks for your vote of support for Wikipedia Rotuman! It's going towards what I feel will be a very important resource for the future of my language. Noa'ia!

No problem, and good luck with the project! Setting up a new WP is likely to be quite a bit of work, but rewarding, too. As I said on my comments, you seem pretty enthusiastic, which is always a good sign, and as far as I'm concerned, the more minority languages that have Wiki resources, the better. == Rotuma/Polynesia ==
Hey Matt. Let me have a think for a day or two, there may be a term we could come up with to add to the template that could include the cultures like Rotuma, without having to use 'influenced'. Can't put Rotuma under Polynesian outliers since that is a strict linguistic class. And we can't get rid of that term either. So another term needs to be added - but we may have to include one or two other island groups like the Lau Group with its history of Tongan influence. Are there any others you know of like that. Don't get me wrong here - not saying Lau and Rotuma are the same kind of culture, just have to find a way to include - if we can. And then we have to hope no one will come along and delete it. Sometimes its better to do these things without making too much fuss and getting all those North American 'experts' upset Kahuroa 12:28, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
::Tēnā koe e te whanaunga. Would it work for you if 'Polynesian outliers' became something like 'Polynesian outliers and peripheral cultures' and Rotuma is included there - that way Rotuma is included in the list of Polynesian cultures and there is nothing on the template that says it is not a Polynesian culture. No 'Polynesian influenced' section. How does that feel to you? Basically as you had it, but with the title tweaked a bit. What if we included Lau Group there too or do you think that isn't needed?? Kahuroa 10:57, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
:::Hmm.. I think that'll have to do for the time being. My major qualm is the ambiguity of the existing nav box, in that it refers to Polynesia in the linguistic sense, but doesn't specify that. Other than that, thankyou for your patience and understanding. lso, I must make mention of how much I like your editing style, particularly the artistic way in which you include images, not bound to merely illustrating the subject but taking the message conveyed a little further. Thanks --Mattbray 11:23, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
::::Cheers - thanks for the appreciation - as my mama would say "You made my day". The navbox is (I realise) based on two things - 1, geography - the Triangle. 2, linguistics - the outliers. My advice would be not to worry at this stage about what the basis of the navbox is. So. I'll change the heading - if we think of a better way, we can change it later. Then Rotuma can be fitted in, but leave it up to the article to say why and how it fits. I kinda like it cause Rotuma gets included, which it should be, eh, without needing to mark it as special or different - its just one on a list of Polynesian cultures. I'll make the changes and hope that no-one gets finickity about it. If they do, we can "hey, we're Polynesians, and we consider Rotumans as Polynesians too". I kind of doubt that anyone will tho. What about Lau group? Any thoughts? Kahuroa 05:04, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
::::: Noa'ia 'e ou garue maha (Thanks for your hard work) Kahuroa. I am willing to accept Rotuma as a "peripheral culture". Interesting question as far as Lauans are concerned though, because their polynesian-ness is, as far as I know, a late addition to their culture (Ma'afu and the strong Tongan influence started around 1848, and the wp page for Lau Islands itself says "The Lau Island culture became more Fijian rather than Polynesian beginning around 500 BC"), while Rotuma's wp would say, "Rotuman culture more closely resembles that of the Polynesian islands to the east, most noticeably Tonga, Samoa, Futuna, and Uvea... Because of their Polynesian appearance and distinctive language". I wouldn't call Lauans Polynesians....but you may need to ask one yourself.... I think there is a user called user:laulad? Maybe lauan? --Mattbray 07:29, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
:::E pai ana (that's ok). I think that Lauan house styles resembled Tongan (rounded) rather than Fijian (not). Stuff like that showing Polynesia influence. But was only a thought, I'm happy to leave as is. PS - re the Wikipedia Rotuma (or is that Wikipedia Rotuam) - the votes look very favorable don't they! Good News!

The Rotuman Wikipedia is only one step away from creation. Before the wiki can be created, we need to translate the main interface messages. This page will serve as a place for centralized discussion and coordination, while the actual translation will be on the BetaWiki (see BetaWiki instructions and a full list of Rotuman interface messages). If you have any problems, comments, suggestions, or questions, feel free to post below and we will be sure they are addressed.

While it would be even better to translate the entire interface, some of it isn't very important and can be translated later. If you see any messages you think don't need to be translated, feel free to mention them here.

The following messages don't need translation before final approval (although you are free to translate them anyway). The * symbol followed by a number means that several messages beginning with that are unneeded. For example, unlock* (6) means that six messages with names starting with "unlock" (unlockdb, unlockdbtext, unlockconfirm, unlockbtn, unlockdbsuccesssub, and unlockdbsuccesstext) are unneeded.

 • common* (2)
 • edittools
 • exif-* (273)
 • export* (7)
 • feed* (2)
 • import* (27)
 • lock* (8)
 • mainpagedocfooter
 • mainpagetext
 • metadata* (6)
 • monobook* (2)
 • pagetitle
 • unlock* (6)

I can't emphasize this enough: if you have any problems, comments, suggestions, or questions, feel free to post below and we will be sure they are addressed. There's no reason for anyone to be confused or uncertain if we can help it. :) --Jose77 23:30, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will shorten the above message and write it in a more simplified way. The Rotuman test-project will qualify to become a real wikipedia when the interface messages on BetaWiki have been translated into the Rotuman language. Here are the steps to do so:
 • Step 1: Log-in to BetaWiki.
 • Step 2: Join the Translators group to enable you to translate the interface messages. (This could be achieved by requesting User:Nike to grant you membership).
 • Step 3: Begin translating all of the messages into Rotuman (except for the ones mentioned above which are not compulsory).
 • Step 4: Once the translation is completed, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees will approve the Rotuman project and create the new Wikipedia.

Regards, --Jose77 23:30, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please help render "Fiji Scouts Association" as well as "Be Prepared", the Scout Motto, into Fijian? Thanks! Chris 03:40, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Matt, I have reverted your edit. I have also have a record of your IP address as 124.176.43.199 making similar edits not logged in under your alias which puts you in Australia [1]. Per the prior ruling of the Arbitration Committee, I will report any and all alledged activity appearing to be sockpuppets of User:Johnski. Davidpdx (talk) 03:00, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating the three-revert rule. Please be more careful to discuss controversial changes or seek dispute resolution rather than engaging in an edit war. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text your reason here below. PeterSymonds (talk) 08:38, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Peter. I'm not going to appeal your decision because my conduct has indeed been in contravention of Wikipedia rules about edit war. I apologise for any inconvenience to you. However let it be noted, should my interactions with Davidpdx escalate (please note this is not something I desire), that if you look at his talk page I sought to discuss it very congenially and despite this he continued to undo my edits and he failed to justify this to me. --Mattbray 11:47, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Mattbray. I agree, and I've blocked both for the same period and for the same reason. When the block expires, I suggest you begin dispute resolution; perhaps open a request for comment about your edits, and see if outside opinions can decide whether either edits should remain. I hope that will be sufficient, and I'll be happy to mediate informally over any future discussions. Let me know if and when they occur if you require my neutral involvement.
