:I do however have links to snapshots of what was on my talk page just before each time I trimmed the excess away.

Latin Abbreviations
A place for people to comment on the table I compiled. It isn't intended to be comprehensive, just list the ones that are both common and useful. Caerwine 13:59, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
*I think the list you have compiled is generally okay. Personally, I'd only advocate using e.g. and i.e., and occasionally cf. (which you've not included). Latinate terms such as ibid and et al are not ideal for referencing use on Wikipedia, though that doesn't mean they can't be used. Happy editing, --Cyberjunkie | Talk 14:13, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
*Looks great. Please eliminate the first two columns. --Tysto 14:20, 2005 August 9 (UTC)

Happy editing!

Red & White
I see that you have moved this page, and started a new page with the old name. Unlike a normal move, which sets up a redirect (see WP:MOVE), this means that all the links now link to your new page, and would all need to be fixed - quite a task.

To fix this, I am proposing to rename your new page Red & White (food stores). I would rename the old page Red & White Services, insert a dablink, and create a redirect page with the old name. If you have any comments, please shout soonest, because we need to fix this before links start appearing to the new page. Thanks. == Deleted redirects ==

Hi Caerwine, I've restored the redirects that were on my watchlist 9all the subpages of the stub list). it looks like they were deleted by someone who doesn't understand the difference between an orphaned article (one with no incoming links) and an orphaned talk page 9one with no equivalent article), and assumed that the links weren't any use. == You dot es dot ==

It's been optional for some time, and a good thing too, since many Americans don't like it (it was a US Wikipedian who was most strident in the move to optionalise); a minor consideration is also that the dots are rarely used outside the US and Canada. Acronyms and initialisms are generally written without dots nowadays, as part of an overriding trend by English-speakers; you dot es dot is a glaring and waning exception—the rotary dial of acronyms. While you're still allowed to use the dots if you really like the clunky appearance, it's frowned on to change optional styles from one to another without a very good reason. Likewise, people don't go through articles removing the dots, either. Please observe this policy. Tony (talk) 06:39, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
:MOSNUM was using both U.S. and US, which was one reason I chose to give the measurement section a consistent U.S. usage. And by the way, you'll note from my user box that I still use a rotary dial phone. Caerwine Caer’s whines 21:26, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
:Yes, that was my joke ... which is no longer a joke when explicated. You might have old-fashioned ways, but please be more flexible and stop this campaign against the widely preferred "US". I'm afraid you're up against a lot of people who use it, Americans and non-Americans. I'll deal with the inconsistencies in MOSNUM now. Tony (talk) 01:46, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
::PS There were only two, which someone has inserted into the "Disambiguation" section in good faith. This is bound to happen on a page from time to time, both with and without dots, since editors often forget to check the prevailing option on the page. Now, how can we convince you to loosen up and accept both forms like most of the world? Tony (talk) 01:49, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
:::If it were touching on an international topic, I'd be very loose, but it isn't. I was trying for a middle ground of not using abbreviations where they are not needed, but you reverted those as well. Not everything needs to be abbreviated, y'know. Worse, you also undid the changes I made for the pound sterling. Pound sterling is the more correct form and it avoids abbreviation. The pound sterling is not just the legal tender of the United Kingdom, but also of the Crown dependencies (Isle of Man and the Channel Islands) Technically it would be the GB pound if we followed the ISO 4127 standard if an abbreviation be used. Caerwine Caer’s whines 02:51, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
:::PS, I did it as several edits before on purpose, as I addressed different issues in each. If you feel you must revert again, please don't do it en masse, as they are not all related to the US / U.S issue we are disagreeing with. I will leave that one for last. Caerwine Caer’s whines 02:58, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

re-tweaks
Yes, I'm sorry I lost those in the revert; they're improvements. (I did change to "or" manually first time, but forgot when I discovered how far back your edits went.) Tony (talk) 03:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
:May I put in a plea for the utility of these abbreviations. While some editors prefer the first occurrence in an article to be spelt out (I don't, but I can cope with that), many or most prefer the abbreviations for these oh-so-common items. Likewise we don't spell out "NASA" or "BBC" or a whole host of acronymmed items. Since hardly anyone in the world doesn't recognise these abbreviations, their advantage in uncluttering the text is manifest. Tony (talk) 03:05, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
::The difference is that no one says in every day language "National Aeronautic and Space Administration" or "British Broadcasting Company" while "United States" gets used all the time. I've gone about as far as I can now with the deabbreviation, without being highly excessive. I have another idea to finese more of the US / U.S. issue that I'll be bringing up shortly at the MOSNUM talk page. Caerwine Caer’s whines 03:20, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
:::But just why you care so much about the clunky dots is beyond me. You haven't provided a reason that (1) it's worth converting whole articles, and (2) it improves appearance and readability. Tony (talk) 05:52, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
::::Leaving aside the point issue for the moment, I can't see why you are so insistent on using abbreviations where they do not improve readability. Caerwine Caer’s whines 11:01, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
::::PS, also as I pointed out, UK pound is inexact for the GBP. I think you would agree that replacing UK with GB would likely cause some confusion, so in that case deabbreviation is not aimply a stylistic concern. Caerwine Caer’s whines 11:11, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
:::::Yes, you're right on GB pound; and some of your other edits are improvements. But I'm firmly of the opinion that the use of such well-known acronyms does make the reading easier—highly identifiable and less clutter. (Let me brag: my doctoral dissertation was in the pscyhology of reading; while there's no research to support what I'm saying, it seems intuitive to me.) You seem like a nice ?man, and knowledgeable too, but I can't penetrate these assumptions of yours. PS Don't you get a sore (and grubby) finger using a rotary dial? Tony (talk) 15:10, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
::::::My old Western Electric is sturdier (it survived a lightning strike a few years ago that fried not only the touchtone phones I had, but also one of the wires leading from the main junction box to an outlet) and it has better sound quality than the cheap phones one gets. I also don't make tons of outgoing phone calls. As for abbreviations, I won't deny that they increase reading speed, but as for reading comprehension, I'm dubious. Indeed, the increase in speed likely hurts retention. For material for which retention is unimportant, that matters little, but ideally, a manual of style should not be something to which re-referencing is needed. Caerwine Caer’s whines 17:09, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
