The Adelaide Repertory Theatre (The Rep) is an amateur theatre company in Adelaide, South Australia. It is the longest surviving amateur theatre company in the Southern Hemisphere.[1][2] It was set up in 1908 by students from the Elder Conservatorium.[3] The company has performed drama, comedy, farce and musical theatre. Throughout the history of the company there has been a strong emphasis on volunteers. All cast and crew are volunteers who give freely of their time to present professional quality productions to the theatre going public of Adelaide. The company currently presents four productions each year and The Arts Theatre is used by theatre groups and the community.

For many years since the company's inception they have performed at many venues around Adelaide. They decided that they needed a home they could call their own and after much fund-raising they opened the Arts Theatre in 1963. The theatre was opened by the then Governor Sir Edric Bastyen. The first production staged by The Rep was the Peter Ustinov comedy, Romanoff and Juliet, [1]on the 15th of June 1963. From putting on fourteen shows a year this has steadily declined to four a year. This came about so that the company could better serve the community and allow other companies to hire the venue. The companty opened the Arts Theatre in 1963. The first production there was the Peter Ustinov comedy, Romanoff and Juliet. [4].
