Tribal Wars is a browser based game developed by InnoGames GmbH. The game originated in Germany under the name "Die Stämme" and due to the success of the German only version, a .net version was launched. It is programmed in PHP and runs in any relatively modern web browser.

Although the game is free to play it is financially supported by banner advertising. There is an option to pay a fee to remove these advertisements. There is also an option to pay for a Premium Account which gives you more features than the standard free version.

The Game

When starting the game you choose a world to join. Many of the worlds have slightly different rules, speeds, troop types, etc. Older worlds that are full are no longer available for new players to join but there is usually a choice of about eight different worlds that are open for joining at one time. New worlds are launched when older worlds are almost full, usually every three to four months.

The world is divided into a 10x10 grid with each section called a Continent (K). Each Continent is then normally subdivided into a 100x100 grid. Each of these subdivisions is a square on the map where there may be a village. Each village has coordinates such as (341|289). For example, the previous coordinates would place the village in the third Continent from the left on the X axis and the second Continent down on the Y axis, Continent number 23 or would be referred to ingame as K23. When a world starts, players joining the world will be placed around the centre of the map (500|500) and as more join they will spawn in a radial pattern pushing outwards towards the edge of the map. The centre of the map is known as the 'core' and the outer edge is known as the 'rim'.

The point of the game is to collect as many resources as you can (wood, clay and iron) in order to upgrade and build new buildings in your village. You can gather more resources by upgrading your woodcutter, clay pit and iron mines. Another way of gathering resources is to 'farm' other players by attacking them with troops and then stealing their resources. The more resources you can gather the faster you will grow therefore an aggressive style of play is usually the best way to play.

Other buildings such as the barracks, workshop, or stable will train troops. There are different troop systems for each of the different worlds. A farm is needed to be built to upgrade other buildings and train more troops, the higher the farm the larger the armies. To send these troops, you must have a rally point. From here you can either send support or send attacks. The wall is used to add extra defence to the village and help protect it in an attack. By building a market you are able to trade resources with other players or send them to a friend. A hiding place is built to store extra resources that can't be stolen by enemies. A warehouse can be built to store resources, up to 400,000 of each, but these can be plundered.

When you have upgraded your village to a certain level you will be able to build an academy and then train a nobleman. By attacking another village with a nobleman you reduce the loyalty of the village from 100 by a random number between 20-35. By repeatedly attacking an enemy village with a nobleman until the loyalty reaches 0 you can take control of the village. A villages loyalty increases by a certain amount every hour, how much varies per world depending on settings. The only way to get a new village is to capture it, unlike similar games such as travian where you can found a new village. This reinforces the main point of the game which is war.

Player ranking is based on the accumulation of points from all that players villages. A certain amount of points are awarded for each building and subsequent building upgrade in each village. Another form of ranking is Opponents Defeated (OD) which is then split into Opponents Defeated Attacking (ODA) and Opponents Defeated Defending (ODD). OD points are assigned to a player when he kills enemy troops while attacking or defending. The points awarded for each kill depends on whether the troop killed is a defensive troop or an attacking troop.

Tribes

Although the game can be played solo, the game is usually played in teams called 'Tribes'. You can form your own tribe and invite others to join or you can join a tribe that another person has created. Tribes can provide protection for its members by pooling defence or coordinating attacks.

Tribes are ranked from first place to how ever many tribes there are in a single world. They are ranked by four different factors; Tribe ranking which is the sum of points of the top 40 members, Tribe ODA (Opponents Defeated Attacking) which is an accumulation of members points gained in OD for attacking other players, Tribe ODD (Opponents Defeated Defending) which is an accumulation of members points gained in OD for defending against other players attacks, and Tribe OD which is the combination of both Tribe ODD and ODA.

There is a limit on the amount of players a tribe can have, how much depends on specific world settings. To circumvent this limit some tribes form what are known as family tribes. The aim of Family Tribes is to have a few tribes work very closely together as if they are one tribe. Family tribes are usually frowned upon by other tribes and players in game and are very rarely successful due to the difficulty of coordination. Family tribes should not be confused with Academy Tribes. Academy Tribes are usually a tribe set up under the banner of the main tribe for players who are not good enough to join the main tribe. Usually a small few players from the main tribe will join the academy to teach Academy members how to play well.

Below is a list showing the maximum limit of players per tribe depending on the worlds settings.

End Game

The game is open ended. The winner is the last player left in the world and has never been accomplished.

The game also has several different leaderboards for the player or tribe with with most points overall, or by continent. Achieving the number one position on one of these leaderboards is a form of victory that can be acheived, and is the ultimate goal of most tribes.
