Ryan Paul Jones (born 13 March 1981 in Newport) is a rugby union footballer who plays at Template:Number 8 for the Ospreys and Wales.

Jones played junior football for Bristol City as a goalkeeper until the age of 14. He took up rugby union at age 17 to be with his friends at Risca RFC[citation needed]

In 2004, when the Celtic Warriors were disbanded he was offered a contract with the Ospreys,[citation needed] who went on to win the Celtic League in 2004-05.

He made his international debut for Wales against South Africa in November 2004.[citation needed] He featured in Wales' 2005 Grand Slam-winning side.

Many supporters were surprised when he was not initially selected for the 44-man squad for the Lions tour of New Zealand. He was later called up to cover for the injured Simon Taylor. He played so well in a 30-19 win over Otago that he was called up for the squad for the first test.[citation needed] He came on as a replacement and went on to start in the final two tests. He was considered by many to be one of the stars of the tour.[who?]

In January 2008, Jones was appointed captain of Wales by new coach Warren Gatland.[citation needed] In his first Six Nations tournament as captain, he led his team to a second Grand Slam in four years.[citation needed]

His father, Steven Jones, was a police officer in the Gwent Constabulary, based in Cwmbran. His long time girlfriend Ailsa is a physiotherapist at Swansea City A.F.C.
