Kadamattom Church is one of the most famous churches in India. The church is situated near to Kolenchery near Cochin, India in the Cochin-Madhurai National Highway - 49.

St. George Orthodox Syrian Church

The church is believed to have established by Metropolitan Mar Aboo of the Malankara Orthodox Church in the 10th Century AD. Two parallel fractions in the Orthodox Church claims for the ownership of this church.

Importance of this Historical Church

  • The ancient Indo-Persian Church architecture.
  • Was the church of famous Kadamattathu Kattanar, a priest who had supernatural powers.
  • The ancient custom prevailed in the area known as "Kadamattathu Sambradhyam"
  • Presence of an ancient Persian Cross in the right wall of Holy of Holies (Madbaha)
  • Tomb of the kadamattathu Kathanar (Disputed) excavated in 1990.
  • Poyeddam church, a chapel of Kadamattom church
  • Poyeddam Kinar (well) near the Poyeddom church. The story of Kadamattathu kattanar says that katthanar went to Hell (Pathalam) through this well. In the modern days also, this well is an important centre of Black Magic(mainly non christians and who are opposing Malankara Orthodox Church faith).
  • Most of the historical documents were burned by Archbishop Menezes of the Roman Catholic Church in the 17th century.
