After the Anthems officially formed in October 2006. However, Philip Ciufo, Lee Zavitz, and Phil Johnston played together in former bands since March 2000. Lee met Philip in 1999 in their grade 9 year through a common interest of skateboarding and music. They would spend a lot of time at the local skate park and also making music. Phil J knew Lee through common friends. In 2000 he entered high school, was introduced to the 2, and soon was recruited as their drummer. A band was formed under the title 6 Days Late which was changed shortly after to Unidentified 6.

The band performed their first show during their junior years at their high school under the name Unidentified 6. They played local shows and created 4 albums of songs collectively titled: Do Humans Look Like Their Pets?, Lights Go Out, Unaware, and Loser, as well as several untitled EPs which they distributed at their high school. The band's title remained Unidentified 6 for 4 years until 2004 when the name changed to One Way Out. Up until that time Lee played the bass. After the name change Tim Stead joined the trio to play bass and Lee switched to guitar.

One Way Out released a self-titled album in 2004 and an EP titled Salvage Whats Left in 2005.[5] Shortly after the release of their EP the band went on a short tour[6] with John Reuben and also opened for Thousand Foot Krutch, Seventh Day Slumber, and Hawk Nelson. Shortly after this Tim Stead left the band due to complications with the other members. He was replaced by long time friend of the band Dan Curry who played with the band until March 2006. At this time the band went on hiatus as Lee and Phil J played in the band for fellow Ontario performer Hello Kelly.

During the hiatus, Phil J and Lee began recording demo's of songs they had written under the name After the Anthems. In October of 2006, after Lee and Phil J ceased playing for Hello Kelly, Philip re-joined with them to officially form After the Anthems. Over the course of 2006-2007 the 3 went on to record This is the Sound which was released in September 2007. In August 2007 Jason Soloduik was added to the lineup to play bass. The band then went on tour throughout North America from October to December 2007 at which point Jason was removed from the band due to complications with the other members.

In January of 2008 Krys Neerhof joined the band to play bass. Krys formerly played drums for the Ontario based band Relentless and knew Philip, Lee, and Phil J from shows they had played together. In March 2008 the band started recording remix versions of "This is the Sound", "Believe", and "Don't Let It Get Away" for the release of 3PAC in 2008. [7] The band is currently in the studio writing and recording a new set of songs.

Name origin

The name After the Anthems refers to the Olympics and the anthems that are played after an athlete wins their event. According to drummer Phil Johnston[8]: "At that moment the world is watching you to say what a great job you did. But after the anthems you sort of get forgotten...[a lot of] life is lived after the anthems. It's the place where we fight for love even though no one may be watching or there seems to be little reward..."

Discography

The band has released 2 albums. This is the Sound was released on September 25, 2007[9] and contains 10 tracks.[10] The album has had 2 single's played on various Canadian radio stations. The band also released a music video for the first single "Let it in"[11] which was filmed in Vancouver, BC with director Ben Knechtel[12][13]
