Some critics, however, have charged that Grayson's success is based more on notoriety (and her relationship with the highly successful Waid) than actual talent. A number of fans have complained that her work is poorly paced and prone to narrative excess, with verbose dialogue and captions attempting to compensate for actual story telling. None of her books have sold particularly well, some argue, and those that do, it is claimed, do so because Grayson is paired on those books with highly popular artists, such as "good girl" artist Jim Balent.
